Re: International Soccer League

Seems like a "grey area" competition, yep. ISL commitments required Hearts to withdraw from the Summer Cup knockout stages in 1964... Dunfermline and Hibs were a dead heat for runners-up in their section forcing a playoff (at Tynecastle) for Hearts place in SFs. Hibs won and went on to reached the F...

Re: International Soccer League

It was certainly awarded to the league runner-up in 1959-60 and 1960-61 (i.e. in preference to both Fairs Cup and Anglo-French-Scottish Friendship Cup). Dundee went as champion of 1961-62 and also participated in European Cup. Back to runners-up for 1962-63. Not exactly sure what happened for 1963-6...

Re: European Youth Cup

Thanks, hadn't occurred to me there might be coverage in the papers, being a youth tournament over holiday weekend. Celtic 3-1 Eastercraigs (U15) and Ayr Utd 0-0 Eastercraigs - 4-3p (U16) were Finals in 1973... weekend crowds totalled 20,000 with 7,000 on Good Friday. Celtc 5-0 Fir Park (U14) and Ce...

European Youth Cup

I've got a set of programmes for the "European Youth Cup" - held on Easter weekend in Glasgow from 1973 to 1975. It was not like the modern Champions Youth League but an invitational tournament with clubs from Scotland, England and the continent. Do results exist anywhere - and did it only run for t...

Re: Stamford Bridge Trophy

Thanks both. Unusual to have a trophy for a regular club friendly between the same opponents. Anyone think of other examples? Albion Rovers v Celtic (U20s) each preseason since 2006 for 'Jock Stein Friendship Cup' is a contemporary example. There were abortive attempts at Hearts v Hibs in 1980s and ...

Stamford Bridge Trophy

Back in the day Hearts and Chelsea seem to have played friendlies quite regularly; almost annually during the first half of the 1950s. I've noticed that they were often branded "Stamford Bridge Trophy" or similar, not just regular friendlies. Even when played at Tynecastle. https://www.londonhearts....

Scottish FA Northern XI

Re: Complete Records

All of the books I listed have complete results/lineups/scorers. EDIT: After a quick excursion along the bookshelf, the exceptions - aside from Hibs and Montrose already mentioned - are: * Stirling Albion ... gives full dates, results, attendances for all matches; gives appearances, scorers in seaso...

Re: Complete Records

IOn internett there are Hibernian, Forfar and Hearts + partly Morton. I'm not aware of some of those - are these on FitbaStats (originally iHibs) or elsewhere? Online offerings have proved very transient. Here are those I recall. I've noted in red those which seem to have gone 'defunct'. (Several a...

Re: Opening of Floodlights

Thanks very much. I noticed a suggestion on another forum that the bad winter of 1962-63 may have scupperred Dundee United's plans for a formal opening. On the topic of programmes - I have copies of: Rangers, Hibs, Hearts, QotS, Celtic, Third Lanark, Raith, Queen's Park, Stirling, Dundee Utd St John...

Opening of Floodlights

I have been trying to put together a list of when Scottish League clubs officially opened their floodlights. Can anyone contradict any of these hanselling occasions: 07 Nov 1951 STENHOUSEMUIR v Hibernian 03 Mar 1953 FALKIRK v Carlisle United 10 Mar 1953 LEITH ATHLETIC v Dunfermline Athletic (precede...

Re: 1938-39 Player Autographs as collected by Tommy Walker

That's a fascinating find. For the League of Ireland v Scottish League game on Friday 17th March 1939 assumption would be Bobby Bolt of Falkirk was travelling reserve and George Stevenson was trainer? It was first time a Scottish side formed the opposition in the St Patricks Day representative game....

Re: Birmingham City v Irvine Meadow XI

I recently acquired the programme for Royal Navy v RAF (played at Birmingham the preceding Wednesday). In a rather 'David & Goliath' billing it lists City's next 2 home games as: Saturday next, 14th March, 1959 Wolverhampton Wanderers Football League (Division 1) Kick-Off 3pm Monday next, 16th March,...
