Re: Wembley Appearances

Is Dalglish really still the record? I don't have any access to stats but in Dalglish's day they didn't play semi finals at Wembley as they do now. Given the number of FA Cup Finals the likes of Arsenal have been in with associated semi finals and almost all of their players full Internationals who ...

Re: SUBSTITUTES

I think there is a slight differentiation now relating to having a designated substitute goalkeeper that applies in cup ties but not league games. Not certain when this rule was introduced... Not all Cup ties. They've removed the requirement in League games and cups run by the SPFL (League Cup / Ch...

Re: Five goals in six minutes

Was checking the Arbroath Herald for Junior results and came across the report from the Scottish 2nd Division game between Stenhousemuir and Arbroath which stated that Stenhousemuir scored 5 goals in 6 minutes (35th - 40th minute). This must surely be some kind of record in Scottish football at lea...

Re: Lowest attendance?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_div_1/9467878.stm There were special circumstances (it was a rearrangement of a match twice abandoned due to floodlight failure at a neutral venue over nowhere remotely near either side's home town) but ourselves and Ross County were both full time when...

Re: Nationalities

I'm not. Since the late 80's there has a been a significant influx of "foreign" labour (including other UK nations) into Scottish football, especially at the higher levels. It's pretty unlikely that both Scottish Cup Finalists wouldn't have a non Scot in their starting line up or management. A quick...

Re: Player wages through history

In 'The First 100 Years' book, it is explained the league made a rule that amateur players could not be poached during the season. Is that still the case? I don't think you can cancel a registration unilaterally anyway. It needs club and player to cancel it mutually. Otherwise it expires on 30th Ju...

Re: Player wages through history

Peterhead are very well paid for a League One club. A first team player there will be on nothing like £30 - £40 per week. More like 10 times that. In fact there won't be many established first team players in league football at all earning as little as £30 - £40. Even in league 2 it's more likely go...

Re: Player wages through history

I'd also be interested in general information on lower division wages in Scotland. Whereas a Fourth Tier player in England might earn £800 a week, I suspect in Scotland the amount would be a fraction of that. Outside of Hibs and Dundee United there won't be many second tier players in Scotland maki...

Re: Scotland/World Cup

Johnny Russell and Fraser Fyvie were never remotely as good as they were made out to be anyway. The reason their careers went backwards is because they actually weren't all that good, Fyvie in particular is a very average footballer who isn't even a certain starter at Hibs in the second level of Sco...

Re: New Types of Team in the SPFL Challenge Cup

Regarding individual players, it is quite possible that someone may make an appearance(s) in the Challenge Cup for their club U20 side as well as playing for their first team in the League, League Cup or Scottish Cup. My intention, for the Scottish Football Almanac, is to regard the clubs U20 side ...

Re: QUEEN OF THE SOUTH

Figured it was as well to adapt this to my own list updating as I make my way through the official club minutes. Queen of the South Alec Wright 1 Jun 1928- 31 Jul 1931 George McLachlan 1 July 1935 - Mar 30 1937 Willie Ferguson 30 Mar 1937- 28 June 1938 Jimmy McKinnell Sr 5 July 1938 – 30 June 1946 J...

Willie Ferguson actually resigned at a Board Meeting on 28th June 1938.
Jimmy McKinnell Snr was appointed Secretary - Manager at the next Board meeting on 5th July 1938.

Re: Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics

Any way, match reporting today is too-much about what the manager/coach/player said, and not enough about what the reporter thinks. I still recall some advice given me, by the ancient theatre critic of one Daily for which I worked: "In reviewing a game, you are as much of a critic as I am in the th...

Re: Quickest hat-trick

Bryce also scored a hat-trick vs. Dumbarton 2nd Division 22/2/1997 @ Palmerston Park with goals in the 74th, 75th & 77th minutes. I was at that one too though I think he'd already scored in the game so those were his 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals. There's a good interview with Bryce in which he discusses ...
