Re: Troqueer Cup?

Thanks to all for their suggestions. As I mentioned, the medal looks fairly new. The person enquiring explained that her Grandmother found it some time ago, but has memory difficulties and can't remember where or when.

Indeed it is, and Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club hold a tournament by that name! I've contacted them in case they can shed any light on it.

Troqueer Cup?

Over on the Motherwell Community Group on Facebook, someone has posted a picture of a medal that was found some time ago. The back is engraved "S.A.F.A. TROQUEER CUP" (that is the correct spelling from the medal) and the front is engraved "R. McNAB CAPTAIN". It's in excellent con...

Re: League Fixtures

The English League had a more systematic approach to compiling their fixtures, see Simon Ingles' superb history for details. And it doesn't surprise me in any way of the SPFL's bungling. What idiots. I remember seeing a picture in a book from the early 1970s showing how the Football League worked o...

Re: League Fixtures

I had noticed that, and all four away the previous week. It begs the question, has either event happened before?

This was done with the Lanarkshire Cup in the late 70s/early 80s.

Re: "The [Insert Dignitary Here] Kicked-off"

I think this was as you say “ a ceremonial thing ”. I think Baseball has a similar thing today especially to open the season. Indeed. Still goes on in baseball today, and not necessarily only to open the season. Celebrities are wheeled out for the most tenuous of reason, including cross-promotion o...

Have these been published? Particularly curious about the Celtic v Ross County one where there was talk of a boycott.

Re: Henry & Moses McNeil

Another example of a 'misleading' birth certificate was Bernard Breslin of Hibs. His father was illiterate and signed the certificate with an X, so the name was written down phonetically by the registrar as Bracelan. As someone who has spent many hours going through the Records Office in Edinburgh,...

Re: Lowest away attendance

Slightly off-topic, but a number of years ago, a preseason friendly saw Newcastle United making the trip north to Berwick. BR laid on a special, which was greeted at Berwick by a significant turnout from Northumbria Police including dogs and horses. The ONE passenger who alighted was somewhat honour...
