Re: Stirling Albion book
Received my copy. An impressive work of 212 pages, slightly over A5, thoroughly illustrated in full colour. After some intros/history/etc. there are pen pics of each manager. Most of the book devotes a double-page to each season containing on left a team photo; a few bulletpoints of significant, int...

Re: Celtic v Third Lanark 08/05/1926
Due to the General Strike of course. In some respects I'm actually impressed the various Charity Cups continued - I do notice the Scotland v Wales schools international due for Aberdeen was postponed. Celtic: 125 Years of Competitive Matches gives their XI as: Shevlin, W McStay, Callaghan, Wilson, J...

Re: Two new books
There is a new book on Stirling Albion available to pre order now. Details on club website. I gave only just found out about a book that was published in April. Scottish league and cup football 1890-95 is available via lulu.com. Bought books sound like good additions to the collection. Alan Stirlin...

Re: Manifest Destiny - St Johnstone 1885-2015
I've got copies of "Bristling with Possibilities" (many pages falling out: apparently there was a bad batch) and "Manifest Destiny".
Both have dates/results/attendances/lineups/scorers/notes for all games - including local cups, friendlies, etc.
Also compilation of records/firsts/bests/etc.

Re: Glasgow Dental Cup
There was an equivalent tournament in 1921-22, on that occasion raising money for the Lord Provost's Rent Relief Fund. Identical arrangements... 6 Glasgow clubs/autumn midweek afternoons/1 tie per week/etc. https://web.archive.org/web/20170227070616/http://www.scottish-football-historical-archive.co...

Central League trophy aka Calder Shield found
I've vague memories of Central League minutebooks being tracked-down some years ago? Stirling archives? Anyway, proof the strangest stuff turn-ups... someone seems to have handed its trophy into Bo'ness v Newtongrange in EOSL earlier. After CL was absorbed into SFL it became a senior cup for Linlith...

After losing 16 on the trot in all competitions Berwick finally won last week (2-0 v Spartans) and with a clean sheet. Still awaiting a league win for now.

Re: John Byrne
Sad to hear this - man who compiled the complete Scottish Cup results book (1873-1986)? Always had great admiration for that... core resource for the history of the Scottish game and compiled in the pre-internet days when you had to get yourself along to a library or archive, roll your sleeves up, a...

Re: Berwick Rangers
It bottomed-out at 50 goals without reply - prior to opening the scoring at home to promoted Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic on Tuesday... That game finished Berwick 3-5 Bonnyrigg. Berwick have not avoided defeat since beating Peterhead 2-0 on March 19th (which was a midweek game). Before that you have to r...

Re: Clyde v Albion / Queens Park
It is particularly concerning as no consistency is being applied. In the League Cup groupstage Hearts were deducted 2pts (and Cove awarded nothing). Clearly that was so they could still qualify from the section.

Matches to mark Government Reorganisation
With the UK leaving the EU in a few weeks I'm reminded of the supranational game which took place at Wembley on Wednesday 3rd January 1973, to mark the admission of Denmark, Eire and the United Kingdom into the EEC. It was billed "The Three" v "The Six"... in other words a Denmark/Eire/UK select aga...

Re: Prisoner of War football in Scotland
Germans PoWs 6-3 Spittal Commercials in early July 1947 in an infirmary fundraiser at The Stanks, Berwick-upon-Tweed. They were from 120 Sunilaws camp, Kelso. Kelso United wrote to SFA in April 1948 about " ex-prisoners of war and displaced persons " playing for civilian teams. It was referred to IF...

Considering the weather forecast and Stirling Uni hosting Tynecastle in the South Challenge Cup the day before, the pitch could be in interesting nick for the 2nd SF.ScottishFA wrote:Clearly not a problem in the women's game!
In theory it could be accomodating 360mins of football in 27hrs.

2 Games at 1 Stadium on 1 Day
Hampden will host both League Cup SFs a few hours apart next month. How often has this happened before in Scottish football? Example would be the Olympics in 2012... Egypt-Honduras + Spain-Japan. Only counting first-class games... i.e. not including youths, non-league or friendlies (including local ...

Re: Old League Cup criteria
There was a good article in Scottish Football Historian (quite early in the run I think) all about the technical details of the League Cup down the years - including seeding and format, the adding and removing of 2nd legs in ties, and all that sort of stuff. From the mid-1950s to mid-1970s did Group...
