Re: SEMI FINMALS

ScottishFA wrote:Clearly not a problem in the women's game!

Considering the weather forecast and Stirling Uni hosting Tynecastle in the South Challenge Cup the day before, the pitch could be in interesting nick for the 2nd SF.

In theory it could be accomodating 360mins of football in 27hrs.

2 Games at 1 Stadium on 1 Day

Hampden will host both League Cup SFs a few hours apart next month. How often has this happened before in Scottish football? Example would be the Olympics in 2012... Egypt-Honduras + Spain-Japan. Only counting first-class games... i.e. not including youths, non-league or friendlies (including local ...

Re: Old League Cup criteria

There was a good article in Scottish Football Historian (quite early in the run I think) all about the technical details of the League Cup down the years - including seeding and format, the adding and removing of 2nd legs in ties, and all that sort of stuff. From the mid-1950s to mid-1970s did Group...

Re: Here We Go Again

None of the alternatives are optimal either... ... stopping after 33 games is imbalanced and too few; clubs don't want to downsize to 10 playing x4; or expand to 16-20 playing x2; other splits have their own issues. For its foibles this model has actually lasted the longest of any in Scottish top-ti...

Re: Extra Time in Scottish Football

Almost certainly such instances were just bespoke agreements - perhaps to avoid another long journey; cancelling an upcoming local cup-tie or glamour friendly; players' unavailability; etc. Others pre-1908?: 1876-77 ... Final ... Vale of Leven v Rangers 1877-78 ... SF ... Renton v Third Lanark 1879-...

Re: Extra Time in Scottish Football

Worth adding that special arrangements applied in the late 1940s due to the "Fuel Crisis" and productivity scare. At the end of February/start of March 1947 restrictions were introduced on midweek football. Hearts v Cowdenbeath in R3 which had been postponed went to extra-time whereas the ...

Re: Extra Time in Scottish Football

I think that must have been an 'exceptional' arrangement. It looks like extra-time in 2nd replays onward was introduced in 1908-09. Famously there was confusion when the Final 1st replay didn't go to extra-time causing riot and in the end the cup wasn't awarded. After this extra-time was introduced ...

Re: London Hearts results database

Aye, unfortunately it only seems to show games on dates where the site has a newspaper report image. Just wondering if there's a "way in" to any date or week.

London Hearts results database

With the demise of Statto.com, there's a handy feature on "London Hearts" giving the results of Scottish League and League Cup matches (and all English football) for any given week. If you scroll to the bottom of this page on the Edinburgh Derby 50yrs ago, for example, you'll see what I me...

Re: Lowest attendance?

Nope... 431 was the attendance for Gretna FC v Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the top division in 2007-08, nevermind in tier 3! Though not played in Scotland only 403 attended the Scottish Challenge Cup R3 tie TNS v Livingston this season... it was little better than the 733 who watched the same ma...

Re: Maley's Record Still Remains Unbeaten

On the otherhand I'd question whether records set during WWI should count. Lower-league shut-down, Scottish Cup shut-down, clubs outside central belt withdrawn, rules relaxed, even 1 game unplayed. Similar numbers of clubs played on in WWII - but it's entirely voided as it wasn't officially SFA/SFL ...

Re: Renfrewshire Cup finals

There is a booklet giving details on the Renfrewshire Cup until the mid-1920s, IIRC, produced by Stewart Davidson. It may give final line-ups, I can't recall. No further volumes were produced. Some post-war details will be found on St Mirren Programmes website: http://www.stmirrenprogrammes.co.uk/St...

Re: Sheriff of London Charity Shield

It was the size of a wardrobe door. Here it is pictured in Arsenal hands along with many other trophies: there is - by any other measure - a pretty formidable shield off to the left too, and presumably the FA's Charity Shield directly to the right of the Sherriff of London's. https://pbs.twimg.com/m...

Re: Glasgow against Sheffield

By the way, the same day the papers report a Hawick restaurateur being fined 10s (plus 22s 6d costs), or 5 days in prison, for selling a pack of chewing gum out-of-hours.

No half-measures back then when it came to the long arm of the law!

Re: Longest Gap between Scottish Cup appearances

Ah, fair enough. That said it's increasingly 'complex' nowadays with clubs going bust 'n reforming, others appropriating histories, and so on.

Anyway basic question stands.
