Re: Scottish Cup

SFA's coverage on twitter etc. was actually pretty good (a few years ago they were getting justified pelters for barely recognising R1 existed) - but even they fell into the same trap e.g. at one point I think they talked about Edusport having their first-ever tie. Also I temper too hearty congratul...

Re: Scottish Cup ties in Edinburgh

Thanks, so 84yrs, that's quite a stretch! Spartans v Vale of Leithen is on Friday night due to an Edinburgh City league game, so there won't be 4 on at the same time sadly. One freak of the situation is that with Hibs away and Hearts reversing their game to Partick due to the delays with Tynecastle'...

Scottish Cup ties in Edinburgh

There are 4 Scottish Cup ties in Edinburgh this weekend in R1 - Spartans v Vale of Leithen, LTHV v Inverurie Loco Works, Edinburgh University v Lossiemouth, Civil Service Strollers v Strathspey Thistle. There hasn't been more than 3 since the cup went 'all in' from 2007-08. Anyone know when there we...

Re: Domestic Attendance Records Progression

Apologies if I've misunderstood what's meant here... but mention of "defunct" tournaments and categories like the Glasgow Charity Cup and Inter-City matches, made me think of the Inter-League matches. According to AFS the crowd at Celtic Park for the Scottish League v Football League on 8t...

Jimmy Frame - Rangers and Dumbarton

This forward - full name James Buchanan Frame - was born on 22nd October 1929... He signed for Rangers from Clydebank Juniors in September 1948 but only seems to have made 1 first-team appearance the month before (as a trialist?), probably as he was on national service: he played for the British Arm...

Re: First of Many I Guess...

Perhaps unsurprisingly, quite a lot of terrace chants and songs have their origin in hymns and other religious songs. Off the top of my head - "When the Saints Go Marching In" (self-explanatory)... "This is my Story, This is my Song" / "Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine"...

Re: 1967 and all that!

Scottish football was in demand globally. Outwith the U-S-A tournament, Dundee and Dunfermline met the Manchester clubs and Chelsea in tour matches across America. Hearts toured Iceland. Queen's Park toured Sierra Leone. Before the season had finished Rangers visited Toronto. There are probably othe...

Re: 1967 and all that!

I enjoyed watching BBC Scotland’s programme on the Lisbon Lions last night. With the exception of the demise of Third Lanark, what a year that was! Here is my list. Is it complete? Club European Cup winners – Celtic European Cup Winners’ Cup losing finalists – Rangers (only non-Scot in the final wa...

Re: Indoor Football

AFAIA it was the first competitive senior match - and therefore senior cup final - played indoors. There have been a number of U20 games, youth internationals and so on played at Oriam since it opened last year, plus as noted a couple of Junior games were played at Ravenscraig (and also at Toryglen?...

Re: Scottish Services team - tour to Belgium 1945

Other than the result - Belgian Services 2-1 Army-RAF Combination - nothing else appears in the "AFS War Reports" or "Datasport Book of Wartime Football" publications.

Re: Player wages through history

I think there is quite a bit of information on this dotted throughout Bob Crampsey's SFL Cententary book and also his small book - A5 slim paperback - called "The Scottish Footballer"? There were I think maximum wages in both the wars - certainly the Second World War - to give clubs a bett...

Re: Oldest Scorers

Bump. East Kilbride's social media is suggesting Robbie Winters may have become the oldest-ever Scottish Cup goalscorer today, netting twice in a 9-1 First Round win. Remarkably, Winters is less than 6 weeks short of his 42nd birthday. None of the usual suspects... Craig Brewster, Andy Millen, Davie...

Re: BARCA 7, CELTIC 0

It's undoubtedly an embarrassing result and if Rodgers doesn't think losing 1-0 to a team from Gibraltar, or 7-0 to Barcelona, is embarrassing then you have to ask what is going to qualify so in his eyes. Perhaps losing 7-0 to a team from Gibraltar... Tbf, it's not as if such scores are only a recen...

Re: C Division Supplementary League, 1948 & 1949

They did a similar thing in domestic rugby union last season after the SRU pulled the Scottish clubs out of the British & Irish Cup. Having reduced the Premiership 1 down to 18 games from 22... initially by introducing 3 'splits' into the top 2 divisions after 1 round of matches/latterly by redu...
