Re: Renfrewshire Competitions

Stewart- do the minute books provide any clues as to how Babcock and Wilcox won the Renfrewshire Cup in the 50's?

Seems unlikely that they would have beaten both Morton and St Mirren in a semi and a final?

Or did the big two meet in a semi? Or not take part that year?

Re: ALL 4 DIVISIONS

Derek Collins was the first ( i think) to play in all four divisions with the same club. He made his debut for Morton in 87-88, the last time we were in the Premier League. He then played first division football the following season. And he played for Morton in the Third in 2002/03 and the Second th...

Thanks for the reply. I'll maybe need to e-mail the author. 1991 was the year Bellaire beat St Mirren in the semi, with Morton winning the final. St Mirren then withdrew for a few years, as did Morton in the late 90's/early 00's however the tournament continued. It should read 90-1991 MORTON 91-1992...

Occasionally the list of winners of when it was a senior tournament includes the year after Clyde played Partick when in fact this was the last senior Glasgow Cup final.

The Winners - latest edition query

Does the latest edition of the Winners have the Renfrewshire Cup winners correct now ? The first edition has no competion for a few seasons from 91. In fact the only year it wasn't competed for in the 90's was 1994. I can't remember if I wrote in at the time when I discovered this ! I certainly wrot...

With regard to the semi being held in the correct season...this isn't always the case. Last year Morton played their semi three days before the final. This was the case two years before that as well. In fact that year the crowd for the semi was 900, last night it was only 127. With the finals now be...

Yep, the Ayrshire Cup, like the Renfrewshire Cup , is quite magnificent. Although, as you say, 3000 would be a low Killie attendance, I wonder if it would still be higher than if they played Championship English opposition pre season ? Using St Mirren as an example, I think they pulled in around 150...

Wow ! Thanks for the information.

It can't be common for a club's record home attandance to be at the ground of their local rivals !

In my mind they'd played it more often ! Shows how wrong you can be.

With crowds over over 3000, I wonder why they knocked it on the head ?

Morton's record home attendance at Love St

I recently read that Morton's record home attendance was actually recorded at Love St in the late 40's as Cappielow had drainage problems (I think)

Does anyone know who the opponents were ? I'm guessing Rangers or Celtic?

The bizarre thing about Ayrshire is that in recent times there has been a Westsound Challenge trophy.

Wonder why they let the Ayrshire Cup die off when they continue to meet regularly anyway ?

The Lanarkshire or Ayrshire Cups could be brought back in the same way. Hmmm. The general understanding appeared to be that the county cups were gone for good when the county FAs vanished yet of course the continued existence of the Renfrewshire Cup - with additional involvement it seems through th...

Just to clarify a few things. The only times in recent years when only the Victoria Cup finalists have met Morton or St Mirren in the final without a semi were in the early 90's when St Mirren withdrew in a huff after losing to Bellaire in 91 at Love St and in the late 90's /early 00's when Hugh Sco...

Babcock and Wilcox - how did they win Renfrewshire Cup in t

Can anyone shed some light as to how Babcock and Wilcox won the Renfrewshire Cup in 1953 ?

Did Morton and St Mirren not compete that year ?

Were they drawn together in the semis , with Babcock producing a shock in the final ?

Anyone know ?
