Re: Rangers Newco - How the SFL lines up

Or Donald Trump, having arrived to negotiate with Oor Neil turning Hampden into a pitch 'n putt with executive Museum Bar, realising he's forgotten something important.

Re: So, farewell then, Rangers

I can't visualise them disappearing; even if they're wound up and a new Rangers is formed, they'll take over enough thousands and have enough clout in our pond for that to be unrealistic. Without taking sides on whether or not such an entity ought to start at the foot of the third, the track record ...

Re: BBC Sportsound, Liam McLeod's hearing and sundry other r

The media is an outrage, and indeed never lets itself down with a more resounding thump than on occasions like yesterday. Perhaps one of the most significant effects is a pervasive, pernicious self-fulfilling prophecy; people supporting either semi-finalist, or indeed any side other than OF, are giv...

Re: Rangers FC History - dead?

Newspapers, especially the tabloids, don't attract the same singular brand loyalty as a football club; the lack of significant upsurge in competitor sales after the NotW's demise would probably be because many of its readers were already buying others. My parents had the Mail, Mirror and People as w...

Re: Is Scottish football finished?

I see too many posts here effectively dismissing how poorly our teams perform if the odds are against them anyway. If 0-5 against Tottenham is just how it is, are we saying that 0-9 against Man City would have been ok? And what if it were Barcelona? 0-12 before the eyebrows are raised? The comparati...

Re: Is Scottish football finished?

Or even Scotland v itself. There is no argument about the relative size of our market and how the economic dominance of the biggest clubs is more and more important to on-field success and power. As well as that I think we all accept that, since the days when our clubs could compete fairly regularly...

Re: Levein

Yep, words failed me. It seems to me that it's at least thirty years now since this über-negative style went out of fashion. Why? Did teams start realising how it was constraining players? Or that by playing so deep and so close to your own goal, you left yourself open to the possibility that one sl...

Scottish teams in Europe - or should I say - out of Europe

The results make me sad, but the attitudes make my blood boil. Stoked up by the majority of our media is a feeling that any time we take a step outside our parochial muddy waters is almost a step too far, that we're basically out of our depth. We gaze in wonder, our humble collections of lads taking...

Supporting England

We can't wave the magic wand and rip their media up and start again, so it's a thousand times no. Our inferiority complex, Andy Cameron's England-cannae-dae-it-cos-they-didnae-qualify being an example, is an issue for us, but it doesn't negate their obnoxiousness.

Just a few further thoughts regarding Oor Bob Wilson. While I've no reason to doubt his personal niceness, he's always in my view been a desperately poor presenter in a sea of poverty. The nadir was one of ITV's laughable preview progs ahead of Euro 96, a studio discussion with experts and a studio ...

Going back to reconstruction, I'm one of the guilty many who regarded the original reconstruction of 75/6 as an outstanding success, when in truth what we were witnessing was all about the coincidental rise of Ferguson and McLean. It seems to me that with the continuing plummeting of standards withi...

draws r us

And wasn't it little more than 20 years ago that someone decided it'd be cool to have Mrs Thatcher make the draw for one of the latter rounds of the Cup before a single match in the previous round had taken place? For the SFA our wee trinket presumably needed the added prestige, whilst for the lady ...

TV history

I hope someone can help here with what's a fairly vague question I'm afraid. I recall that there was a TV series, aired one episode a week I think, in the run-up to one of the World Cups (82? 86?), about the history of the game in Scotland. I don't remember details now from it, except that Bob Cramp...
