Scottish Cup

Noticed that the BBC again distinguished themselves with their Scottish Cup coverage yesterday. A catch-all report included the news that Glenafton Athletic had won their first ever Scottish Cup tie in their debut meeting with Threave Rovers. The reporter appeared oblivious to the fact that the New ...

Re: John Jackson - Scotland goalkeeper 1931-1935

Forrest, as a born and bred 'Mariner', I can confirm it's most definitely pronounced CAME...LON. You are indeed correct though when mentioning the posh derivative of CAMEL...ON. I can't recall any Camelon people ever using the posh version, only the 'Fur Coat 'n' Nae Knickers' outsiders referred to ...

Re: Definition of 'scrimmage'

I've got to say that I always considered the 'scrimmage' being akin to the scrum in rugby. I'm sure I've read stories of teams effectively surrounding the ball and edging towards goal whilst the defending side attempts to hold them at bay. It would explain why so few goalscorers are actually identif...

Re: Senior and Junior Football

From recollection, I'm fairly sure the 'private ground' criteria had something to do with the early designations between senior and junior. While the earliest years of the Scottish FA Cup would have included clubs with no privately owned ground, e.g. original entrants Callander, I'm fairly sure the ...

Re: The Pyramid

With Edusport Academy having been confirmed as being promoted to the LL as Preston Athletic's replacement for next season, I think it aptly demonstrates one of the major flaws in the SFA licensing criteria. While finance, youth development, accessibility and all sorts of requirements are listed, sur...

Re: Nationalities

You can only imagine that either Celtic or Rangers listed entire non-Scots starting line-ups in the Martin O'Neill and Dick Advocaat days. I'm fairly sure Barry Ferguson was the only Scot playing regularly for Rangers around that time. In those days, admittedly when Rangers were signing players that...

Re: Negative goal difference in League One

Certainly an unusual occurrence I'd have thought, Andy. Also, Brechin City could conceivably be promoted despite having lost more games than they won!

The Pyramid

Some very interesting developments over the past few weeks in regard to the Scottish pyramid system. While both Kelty Hearts and Bo'ness United appear to making serious noises about the pyramid structure, neither have categorically stated that they would move from the junior ranks. Both appear keen ...

Re: Player wages through history

Did such a scenario not directly lead to formation of the Intermediate grade as junior clubs felt exposed to the ravages of the cherry-picking SFL and EFL clubs?

Re: Glasgow Hibernian FC

Hibernian Park was sited on Rutherglen Road near Oatlands.
It was taken over by Thistle FC and renamed Braehead Park and staged Scottish League football briefly.

Re: Old Scottish football ground

Got to say that I'm still inclined to suggest Powderhall. Looking at the few aerial pictures of Marine Gardens I'm not sure it was as tight to the pitch as the picture seems to suggest. Also, I don't see any grandstand at Marine Gardens. Leith Athletic were at Powderhall immediately prior to moving ...

Re: Old Scottish football ground

I've got a few photos from the Falkirk Herald archive from around this time and see no evidence of lights that would've suggested a greyhound track. Falkirk certainly had greyhound racing at Brockville but I'm not seeing anything in your picture to suggest its Ochilview. There appears to be the end ...

Re: Old Scottish football ground

I'm still puzzled by this picture. I don't doubt that Stenhousemuir operated as a greyhound venue for a short spell but I'm not recognising Ochilview. Also, why would East Fife not be wearing their traditional gold and black stripes? I'm not disputing your answer, merely a bit curious. PS...could it...
