Re: Scottish Cup
Logically the League is the premier competition by its very nature yet Scottish Cup ties still take precedence over League fixtures. There was a time when even Glasgow Cup ties took precedence over League fixtures. I suspect that the change in attitude happened after the First World War. I don't th...

Re: Scottish Cup
Incidentally, even after the formation of the League the Scottish Cup was still regarded as the “blue riband” trophy. Does anyone know when it ceased to hold that status? I think that is impossible to pin down with any precision - it was a gradual evolution rather than a specific moment. However it...

Re: Alan Hodgkinson RIP
Sad - my first thought was I seem to remember him working in football quite recently, and indeed I see he was still working until 2012!

Re: What team is this?
Doesn't look like a forces team to me, not just because of the non-players in civvies, but they just don't look crisp enough to me. Pre-WW2 (as this surely is) they would have been professional military, not conscripts, and they don't look nearly hard enough to me (and a couple of them surely too yo...

Obviously the shield is not unique in stature judging by this photo of the even more ginormous Sherrif of London Shield:

Re: New Scotland strip
It always amazes me why the SFA/Adidas do not consult fans on what they want. Surely if you get a good idea of what would be popular it would lead to more sales? In fact I think that's EXACTLY what they do - the kits are designed with more than half an eye on what the discerning punter will allow t...

Re: New Scotland strip
On a purely aesthetic level I think the main strip is guff. I hate those white shoulder and sleeve jobs - they look like you're wearing a bib over a white shirt. Overall the design is reminiscent of some crap kit from the 1980s. Mingin.

Re: Making Scottish Football Better
On a similar theme I was interested to see an article on the BBC Website on how Iceland’s grass roots football has developed so that the national team is now playing in the Euros 2016. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30012357 Like all good ideas it sounds so simple! In a harsh climate they en...

Re: Clubs Reforming
You seem to have missed the fact they haven't been called Airdrie United since the summer of 2013 now either. They changed their name back to Airdrieonians two seasons ago. So I did - but now you mention it I seem to have some vague vestigial memory of it happening. Interesting that they don't list...

Re: Clubs Reforming
Then again, they don't seem to be harming anyone - and it's not quite as egregious as 1860 Munich, whose football department didn't start until 1899, and didn't even get around to playing another team until 1902! To be fair, 1860 Munich's name refers to the (re)foundation of the gymnastics club whi...

When Hibs played there last season just after he went on 'gardening leave', they were giving the grass a final trim with the lawnmowers before kick off, so the Hibs fans started singing "Ally Ally give us a wave..."
