Yes of course we could choose to build the necessary facilities. However, we have no ongoing use for them, hence vast expense. The other countries you quote staged much smaller tournaments - 8 teams for Sweden, 16 for the rest. We could easily stage a tournament of 1992 proportions but that is no lo...

Absolute nonsense to be launching another stupid bid for a tournament we blatantly fail to have the facilities for. We have some fine stadia but they are all in one city. There is absolutely no point to building huge white elephant grounds elsewhere in then country. An expensive, pointless ego-trip ...

There was certainly a McBain playing for St Johnstone during the seasons mentioned and it wasn't Neil as he remained in English football as a player until 1931 and as a manager from 1929 onwards. But if it was Laurie McBain then he must have changed positions as from towards the end of the 1929-30 ...

Regarding Laurie McBain, Pat Kelly's Dundee United Who's Who has a few contrary details to those provided by Leatherstocking above, although it's not the most reliable book so this could well be wrong! Kelly says McBain was with St Johnstone from 1927-33 and played for Raith on loan in 1929. He join...

The Trinidad Guardian reckoned Latapy had "100+ caps" as of May 2006. Statistical precision, eh?

I'm sure that the Scottish League Review books in the 80s gave the title as Ibrox Stadium in the club information section; I think I may also have been under the impression that the official change dated from circa 1979 but that would have been an assumption rather than any hard fact - the informati...

15 appearances, 6 goals. These spanned the years 1935-48, so obviously he would have substantially more caps if the War hadn't intervened.

A quick leaf through The Men With the Educated Feet reveals the Queens line-up was: Taylor, Gilmour, Barr, Holmes, Neil, Hunter, Hay, McLaughlin, Buchanan, Campbell, Watson. Which was again pretty much a full strength team for the Spiders at the time, with the possible exceptions of Ian Robertson an...

It should also be added that there was no league competition organised on a national basis during the wartime years. After the suspension of the 1939-40 campaign, regionalised Western and Eastern leagues were hastily introduced. The absence of lucrative fixtures against the Old Firm made this arrang...

Very sad news indeed, Bob was a giant amongst the pygmies of our sporting media. Always a privilege to listen to someone who actually elicited a deep love and knowledge of the Scottish game.

Back here for the first time in ages!

Wilson was on the books at Motherwell at that time but never appeared in the first team. From there he went to Airdrie United, Clyde and Raith before joining Brechin. After that he was with Stranraer and has spent this season with Linlithgow Rose.
