The Carrie Cup was still in existence in 1909-10 when Dundee Hibs were the winners, thus making it the first trophy won in the history of Hibs / United. It was played on a league basis that season and from memory it also included Forfar, Arbroath, Montrose and Dundee Wanderers. No Brechin, as I reme...

Scotland`s 2-1 win on the West of Scotland Cricket & Football Club`s ground @ Peel Street, Partick on 7th March 1874. NB. Never allow that WoS`s ground in those days was in "Glasgow" because Partick was an independent burgh until 1912. Likewise, Queens would have played in the independent burgh of ...

Another one for the list: Eamonn Bannon, Chelsea to Dundee United for ₤165,000, October 1979. Must have brought Wee Jim out in a cold sweat.

Unknown, but apparently nippy inside forward Manuel from Fawlty Towers gave McNeill quite a thorough chasing. Actually - from Bob Laird's pictorial history of Thirds comes the following caption: "The team that was fined by the SFA for playing a friendly match whilst on holiday in Spain. This was in ...

Pat Reilly, founder and first manager of Dundee Hibs, was Irish born but had lived in Dundee since childhood. Former Northern Ireland cap Sam Irving was co-manager of Dundee United with Jimmy Brownlie in 1938-39, once again he had previous Scottish connections, having played for Dundee. Jimmy Nichol...

The old stadium was demolished in 2001. A new ground has been built on the roughly the same spot but sadly, someone with absolutely no sense of fun has named it the "Stade de Suisse".

Not totally sure but I don't think Celtic ever wore numbered shirts in an SFL fixture, this was something that didn't become mandatory until the start of the SPL as part of its "exciting" innovations along with squad numbers and names on shirts.

Glasgow v Sheffield

A small question that occurred to me while looking at results from this venerable inter-city fixture, which was first played in 1874: while the Sheffield sides were clearly selected by the Sheffield FA from the beginning, as far as I am aware the Glasgow FA didn't exist prior to 1883. Who, therefore...

A handful of players have gone from Hampden to Parkhead in the last 20 years or so - Mark Smith, Paul McLaughlin, Malky Mackay, John O'Neill - but I can't add any more from earlier years.

Hewie had previously played for South Africa but this wasn't that odd at the time, especially considering Spain played Kubala (Hungarian) & Di Stefano (Argentinian) in the same game. According to http://www.rsssf.com/tablesz/zaf-intres4755.html , he doesn't appear to have actually represented South...

I see you have Clarkston down as a Glasgow club, but as they were founder members of the Lanarkshire FA and were regularly paired with Lanarkshire sides in the Scottish Cup I've always guessed they were from the Clarkston area of Airdrie rather than from the south side of Glasgow, although that's pu...
