Re: To 'B' or not to 'B'.

According to Sky Sports (Rothman's) Football Yearbook 2003-2004 which is the last issue they listed England "B" International results, the game in question was a "B" international. Hope that helps.

Congratulations Alan, it's great news that the forum will continue. Hats off to David for the sterling work he has done over the years. I only wish I had become part of this great community much early than I did.

Re: Question for Scottish re Saxone Youth Club

Thanks to you both for that information, very much appreciated. Another look at that Championship team shows that 3 of the squad were from Bellfield and 4, most notably Bobby Ferguson and Jackie McGrory, came from Kilmarnock amateurs. Nice to see local talent getting the chance and come out on top. ...

Question for Scottish re Saxone Youth Club

Been looking at Kilmarnock’s Championship winning season of 1964/65. I noticed that 3 of that seasons squad, Ronnie Hamilton, Andy King and Eric Murray were all signed from Saxone Youth Club. Was there any tie-in, formal or otherwise, between Kilmarnock and Saxone? And did the youth club have any co...

Re: Brora Rangers

But are they? The other teams going into play-offs in a similar situation - the second bottom teams in the Championship & League One - don't lose their status in their divisions unless they fail to come through the play-offs. Why should League Two be any different? I have always regarded teams invo...

Re: Brora Rangers

As I see it the correct title would be League 2 Play-off, or to be more pedantic the League 2 Admission Play-off. At the end of the season the team finishing bottom of League 2 is technically no longer a member of the league and therefore has to gain admission or re-admission via the play-offs. It’s...

Re: What To Do Against Gibraltar

The problem lies, as ever, with the inability to think outside the box. If we are satisfied with “grunt” football then by all means continue the policy of selecting players where such football is to the fore. But that is an un-ambitious and backward outlook. Such a style of football might do against...

Re: What To Do Against Gibraltar

The best you can say is we almost but not quite reverted to type, two fortunate penalties helped mind you. So Fletcher got a hat trick, I’m sure he’s proud of that achievement against Gibraltar. I would have fancied Kevin Kyle or even Kris Boyd to do that against such opposition. Still we can look f...

Re: SPFL & TV

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one Scottish. If technology is confined to matters of fact then I could just about live with that. For example, goal-line technology, that is factual – did the ball cross the line or not. However when it impinges on maters that are subjective, then f...

Re: Scots in Europe 1963-64

This first incarnation of the UEFA Cup was introduced in 1955 as the International Industries Fairs Inter-Cities Cup (conventionally shortened to the Fairs Cup). It was open to the cities of Europe that sponsored international industrial fairs. It was intended that cities would field representative ...

Re: League games on Fridays - TV Trend

Any chance of a breakdown of those Hamilton games, Davy? Strikes me as a bit on the high side, especially playing twice as many at home as any other side. Seems Hamilton switched some of their games from Saturday to Friday to avoid clashing with Hamilton Races. This was certainly the case for the g...

Re: SPFL & TV

I do not know what the relationship between TV Broadcasters and other Associations are so I am not sure if it is as insidious as it is here in the UK. My worry is in the not too distant future, TV Broadcasters will end up running football. Lawwell is between a rock and a hard place, his preference m...

Re: Third Lanark's official name

According to John Lister in his excellent book “Third Lanark – Life and Death of the Hi-Hi”, they were formed in December 1872 as Third Lanark Rifle Volunteers FC. When they became incorporated in May 1903 the name was changed to Third Lanark Athletic Club.

Re: First Scotland international in 1872

This has been a great debate since it impinges upon my research into the history of senior Glasgow clubs. It is true many of the teams that are regarded as “Glasgow” clubs were not from Glasgow town but from villages that surrounded it and later to become absorbed into a “Greater Glasgow”. On the ba...
