Re: Soccer Sixes

Hi Brian, Thistle have only taken part in the Tennent's Sixes twice; 1991-92 and 1992-93. You can definitely remove them from '85. These are Thistle's results from '92: 19.01.1992 Celtic [n] L0-4 (Tennent's Sixes Group 1 - game 1) 19.01.1992 Falkirk [n] L1-3 (Tennent's Sixes Group 1 - game 2) 19.01....

Re: The Offshore Game

I haven't looked deeply into these reports but the SFA don't look too clever here on the face of it. At worst, corrupt. At best, inept. I shudder at the very thought that either Rangers-minded or greedy individuals at the SFA could have been in on their last UEFA license "gamble" for reasons other t...

Re: Willie Loney (Celtic, Motherwell, Partick Thistle)

Thanks to you both for digging in here and spurring me on. Before I posted, I wasn't even sure which Denny side this would be, but there's no doubt it is Denny Hibs. Seems the Athletic disbanded in 1916. A terrific piece on Denny Hibs appeared in the Evening Times in 1933. Brian McColl might be inte...

Willie Loney (Celtic, Motherwell, Partick Thistle)

So this Denny-born lad started out with Denny Athletic before establishing his international credentials with Celtic. John Litster has him on the OTT list at Thistle up until 1916-17, during which time he had a loan spell at Clydebank in 1915-16. Thistle, on an idle Saturday 11th November 1916, play...

Managerial contributions to two same-season relegations

So with Jackie McNamara on the verge of this extraordinary double-failure with both Dundee United and York City, I'm intrigued to know, who else is in this "special club" in the UK? And are there any other instances which involve a Scottish club? I make it: Ron Saunders (Birmingham City & West Bromw...

Re: Early Scotland internationalists - new details

Great stuff.

I think I said it before on another thread, but I'll say it again - it's a monumental achievement dotting all those i's and crossing all those t's, 1872 to date.

I look forward to the definitive A to Z being published ; - )

Re: Early Scotland internationalists - new details

Perhaps a first step towards a new Who's Who is for me to list the players for whom I have no clues at all for birth or death information, and in a few cases not even a first name. If anyone can provide some clues to these people, such as an address, an obituary, or a middle name, it would be appre...

I can't bring myself to desecrate Tommy's thread by posting the traumatic image, but this fashionably-challenged outfit sprung to mind:

“ I have been asked to state that tomorrow (Thursday) the Partick Thistle will meet at Partick a combined team of Dundee players. Those not otherwise engaged should turn out to see the play .” ~ Athletic News, Wednesday 12th April 1882 This snip caught my eye - it's a clear statement that the Athlet...
