Re: The first coloured professional football player in Scotl

There is a full account of the life of John Walker in issue 22 of Soccer History with a photograph in issue 23 from his time with Lincoln City. He was almost certainly of mixed race with his father originating from the West Indies (probably Port of Spain, Trinidad) and his mother being Scottish. He ...

Re: JAMES CULLEY

He joined Lincoln in June 1938. Made 34 apps for Alloa in 39/40: 4 in the Scottish League before this was abandoned; 28 in the East Regional League and 2 in the Emergency Cup. He is almost certainly the J Culley who made 2 apps for Stirling Albion as a goalkeeper in September 1945 (1 Eastern League;...

Re: Scotland Amateurs in Kenya

Thanks for the prompt reply. Anyone know if these are classed as full amateur internationals and any idea where I could find the line-ups.

Scotland Amateurs in Kenya

I have recently read that a Scottish amateur team visited Kenya for approx 2 weeks around the beginning of December 1963 to take part in matches linked to the country's independence celebrations. Does anyone have any information on this - for example, matches played, whether these were considered to...

Re: GOAL NETS

Nets were patented by JA Brodie in 1890, the patent application still exists - I've a feeling there's a copy in the Liverpool Record Office, amongst other places. They were first used in the Liverpool area and spread quite rapidly. If you search around on the internet you should be able to find more...

Jack Wilson (Ex-Hibs)

I'm looking to find out what happened to Jack Wilson who was a youngster on the books of Hibs up to August 2009. He then signed a short-term contract for Doncaster Rovers but was released by them in January 2010. I suspect at some point since he has played for Musselburgh Athletic but would be inter...

Re: Queries on historical European Qualification

The English entries for the Coronation Cup appear to be 1st and 2nd in the Football League from 51/52 (Man Utd, Spurs) and FA Cup winners and runners-up from 51/52 (Newcastle, Arsenal).

Re: Andy Campbell (Dundee)

Although there is reference in John Litster's disk to an Andrew Campbell signing for Lincoln City after 1933 (presumably for 1933/34) I can find no trace of this in any of my notes (which are extensive, covering both local newspapers and the minutes of the club's directors). An earlier Andrew B Camp...

Re: Queries on historical European Qualification

The first European Cup tournament was organised by L'Equipe and not by UEFA with entry being by invitation only. This is similar to the Fairs Cup, which was also begun as a private competition (there are earlier European examples, e.g. the Mitropa Cup). In fact only around half of the original 16 en...

From Scotlands People James Gourlay (steelworker) aged 63 died on 8 June 1926 (death was registered on 9 June) at Cambuslang as a result of being run over. His parents were Bertram & Margaret Gourlay (both deceased). There is more information on the death certificate but it is difficult to decipher....

Re: Tommy Walker's Touring XI 1945-46?

I covered this in an article that appeared in issue 15 of Soccer History Magazine back in 2007. There were at least 5 separate tours by British forces squads between Sep 1944 and April 1946. Two of these toured at the same time, Sept to Dec 1945, and were distinguished by the titles 'Denis Compton's...

Third Lanark Team pics 1928/29, 1929/30

Would anyone be able to help me by providing a copy of a team picture of Third Lanark for either 1928-29 or 1929-30 season which includes Sam Latter. In return I will send you a copy of Soccer History with the article on him. Please send me a PM if you can help.

Thanks

Chic Robbie

I am looking for some help regarding Chic Robbie's career with Dundee United. The version of John Litster's disk I have says that he signed for Dundee United on 01/10/1952 and he appears in their Who's Who book, although there are no details of appearances. My records show he was not re-signed by Br...
