Having been (ahem) responsible for building up the SFA website's national team archive when I worked for them, there were all sorts of anomalies like this that cropped up. I did my best to correct long-standing mistakes (eg the Sammy Cox fiasco from 1948), but sometimes it was not possible to be 100...

Just to add to the above, I have now received the Johnshaven Dauntless FC history. Great wee booklet, A5, 44 pages with colour cover, lots of photos to illustrate the text and very nicely designed. The address to send your £3.50 is Clark Simpson, Adelaide Cottage, Castle Street, Johnshaven DD10 0ER....

Happy to help. The only other detail I can add about the match is that the final was played at Olive Bank, Musselburgh, and it was in mid-June 1973.

This is really useful information - it updates the listing in Doug Lamming's Who's Who, not only giving a date of birth but also correcting the place of birth and giving a middle name.

Don't suppose you could email back and ask if there is a place and date of death?

Some non-league books just published

Here are a few books I have come across recently that might be of interest to the type of people who read this message board! What Game? by Dave Hilley is a slim volume that tells the story of games played, mainly by Third Lanark players, in Spain in the late 50s and 60s. A short volume, but an ente...

The criteria has changed over the years. From the very early days, a cap was awarded each season to every player who took part in the British International Championship. The cap would be inscribed with the season, and the letters E, I or W to reflect which matches the player had taken part in. Playe...

This story is a garbled version of the real events of New Years Day 1940, which is recounted in Rex Kingsley's autobiography 'I Saw Stars' (1947). However, the match was Hibs v Hearts at Easter Road, played in dense fog but because of the risk of alerting the enemy to the conditions Kingsley was giv...

The SFA does a disciplinary analysis at the end of each season, for each club in Scotland. And has done for many years. This is how they work out which club to fine, warn (or sometimes praise). Perhaps if you send a polite email to Drew Herbertson, Head of the SFA Disciplinary Department, he might b...

Sorry, no place of birth, that is the complete text as printed. (So no indication as to why he was selected for Scotland, either) But perhaps now you have his full name it will be easier to find out. If you really want to pursue it, no doubt Eton College have old registers with more info. As for the...

I have tried without luck in getting ANY information on Ferguson even through military sources other than that he was at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in 1871 & 1872. Here is a brief biography from 'Fifty Years of Sport' (1922), a very heavy volume which covered the 'great public schools' ie...

Scotland matches in 1940

In April 1940, Scotland played a couple of unofficial internationals: Saturday 24 April 1940, v Empire Army at Tynecastle, Scotland won 4-1. Wednesday 28 April 1940, v Irish XI in Dublin. I know about the games as programmes were published for both of them. Does anyone have match details, and in par...

Just to add to this, I have had a look at the Hibs handbook for 1959-60 and the handbook edition of the programme early in 1960-61, which usefully list not only all the appearances of the preceding season but also the full playing staff. No mention of anyone called Campbell or Prentice in either sea...
