Actually, I think the reason for the discrepancy is not the fact that the Spain game was abandoned. As it had reached the second half, both countries and FIFA recognise it as a full international. Rather, McFadden's goal came from his free kick out on the right which skiffed off the head of the Span...

The game was first played in 1958 to help Scotland prepare for the World Cup finals, and became an annual event for a few years until poor attendances made it redundant. This is the full sequence of matches: 3.2.58 Scottish League 2, Scotland XI 3 (Easter Road) Prog issued. 16.3.59 Scottish League 6...

Shame to spoil a good story, but the 'granny rule' only applies within the UK. To play for Scotland, England, Northern Ireland or Wales, you have to have a British passport. To play for any country, you have to be a national of that country, ie have a passport. Where you were born, or any of your pa...

Oldest Scotland player

Any ideas who was the oldest ever Scotland international player in an outfield position? David Weir is now 37 and still playing regularly, and off the top of my head I can't think of any other outfield player who featured for Scotland beyond that age. Goalkeepers are different, of course: Jim Leight...

Scotsport produced a variety of publications: The Scotsport Book, 1963 (Stanley Paul). Hardback with dustwrapper, looked like an attempt to cash in on the success of Hugh Taylor's annuals but had a few articles on other sports. The Scotsport Football Annual, 1965 (Pelham Books). From John Litster's database of Scottish League players: Robert S Erskine signed for Hibs on 10/9/1952 and was one and a half years at Easter Road without making a first team appearance. In Feb 1954 he joined Peebles Rovers, and that summer signed for Stirling Albion. Made just nine league appearanc...

Thanks for all the responses, and of course the correction about Oswald being with St Bernards.

As for the last point, if Celtic win then not only Pressley but also Paul Hartley would win it in consecutive seasons with different clubs. Perhaps Paul will manage to finish the game this time!

Winning the Scottish Cup with three teams

Steven Pressley could win his third Scottish Cup medal on 26 May with Celtic, to add to those he won with Rangers (1993) and Hearts (last year). Would he be the first player to do so with three different clubs? The nearest I can find is James Oswald who won the cup with Third Lanark in 1889, Hearts ...

Yes, the SFA selected a squad for each World Cup match, before naming the team usually the day before the game. These are the reserve keepers in each squad: John Fallon (Celtic) v Finland 21st October 1964 Jim Cruikshank (Hearts) v Poland 23rd May 1965 v Finland 27th May 1965 Bobby Ferguson (Kilmarn...

There are all sorts of matches involving Scotland that are not considered official by both sides. For example, the first continental tour of 1929 had four games, three of which were deemed full internationals by the SFA. The first two were in Norway against regional selects (East and West). The game...

You should submit a review to Amazon , as the three people who have done so already seem to think it's the greatest thing they've ever read. Back of the net! I agree - it really is worth submitting genuine reviews to Amazon. Their review system is abused by publishers who submit fantastic re...

This is really terrific, well done for such a great piece of research.
