"OK, so having an extra UEFA cup space means our coefficient may be lower - but since all the other nations we are competing with for the top 12/15 or whatever also get another UEFA cup berth, it shouldnt harm us unduly" That's the bit I disagree with. Most other nations in those rankings don't hav...

It would be simpler - but how could we be sure it was true? One of the things I do remember from the 70s and 80s is old codgers telling me how much better things were in the 50s. Yet if you look at Scotland's results in that decade they were pretty dreadful (0-7 v Uruguay, 11 games without a win inc...

I don't think the proposals are as bad as you say. Of the 6 extra places in the CL group stage, 3 go to nations 10 to 12. Also, there are guaranteed to be 5 clubs from nations 13 and below, which is not the case at present. OK, so having an extra UEFA cup space means our coefficient may be lower - b...

I'm getting to the age where I can't remember what I did yesterday, never mind a question I asked over a year ago!

Bert Kassies' excellent web site goes into full detail but basically it's like this:- The 15 clubs in the non-champions qualifiers are these 4th club from nations 1 to 3 3rd from 4 to 6 2nd from 7 to 15 There are 2 qualifying rounds (compared to 4 for the champions qualifiers), and these rounds redu...

Champions League proposals

Just in case the recent changes to the Champions League and UEFA Cup (due to take effect in 2009-10) had passed us all by.... CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Instead of 16 automatic qualifiers, there will be 22. Good news for Scotland - champions of nations ranked 10 to 12 (which usually includes Scotland) will be...

Attendance - Hibs v Leeds 1967-8 Fairs Cup

What was the attendance for the Hibs v Leeds Fairs Cup tie in 1967-8? Your CD spreadsheet has a figure of 30,000 - but this seems both a bit low and suspiciously "round". I'm sure I read in a Hibs history a few years ago that the attendance was something over 40,000.

I do remember a Killie-Hibs league cup tie in 74-75 which finished 3-3, I saw this on telly (we had only just got one after a tv-less period)

1980-1 was a strange season. I moved to England just in time for Aberdeen to be given a going over by Liverpool. The Anglo Scottish Cup was a total disaster (Chesterfield 3 Rangers 0) and the other clubs didn't do much in Europe - but the season was rescued by John Robertson's penalty. The English p...

Have done some double checking. The disallowed goals were mentioned in "World Soccer A to Z" (ed Norman Barrett) whose Scottish contributor was Fraser Elder - who I can remember doing match reports for Sportscene on Saturdays. Apparently Beckenbauer missed a penalty against Rangers, the source for t...

Could it be a different treatment of season ticket holders? Your own book points to anomalies in past attendance figures due to this.

Man U and Liverpool fans are certainly apprehensive about the long-term effects of recent takeovers. I certianly hope we never see league representative teams (although Scotland might do a little better under such a system). Italy and Spain used to field foreign born players in their national teams ...

And football being what it is, a win in Europe for either of the Old Firm means sackcloth and ashes time for the other side. Then there are the seasons we all want to forget - where our teams drop ourt of Europe before the leaves are off the trees, the national team is walloped by England or sinks w...

To be serious - English fans have, for most of the last century, had every right to be proud of their league and its leading clubs. The he average fan who goes to matches is NOT that interested in the England team, even if England one of their players. England fans are, ironically, largely found in ...

I was there when he scored against Dundee United in the 1991 Cup Final. I really wanted United to win (since they'd never won the Cup at that point) but it was a great goal and a great final.
