Re: Euro 2016

I concur with most of what Aten said, but I don't agree about Portugal. In the group stages they went at it hammer and tongs, got suckered by both Iceland and Hungary, and were desperately unlucky against Austria after playing some of the best football of the tournament. Perhaps such circumstances, ...

Re: Euro 2016

Have to disagree with Alan about the standard of football. I'm just back after watching 10 games, in most of which the football was appalling. Similar systems used by both teams negating each other. The goalie to full-back to centre-half to central midfielder to full-back to goalie or centre half wh...

Re: Scottish Secondary Juvenile Cup Winners

BrianD,

While I'm in correction mode, I might as well point out that, although we had some poor players in that era, Mike Larnach never played for Hearts.

Re: Mystery Medal

I've had a look, but nothing springs to mind. However, the Burgh were formed in 1956, not 1950, as stated on the East Fife page.

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists

Apologies, but I was just trying to emphasise the Mac. Following on from the Johnny Russell debate, Johnny's middle name is Archie, not Archibald. He was probably referred to by the family as John Archie, which is very common among Hebrideans, where the middle name is not really a middle name, but a...

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists

As with the newspaper article in the Daily Ranger on Saturday, most folk use the wrong spelling for the "Firhill Flyer".

It is Johnny MACKENZIE, not Mc.

Re: Erskine Hospital Charity Cup

This tournament was played at the end of the season, with the clubs mainly being the local Renfrewshire and west of Glagsow sides - the Burgh, Renfrew, Arthurlie, Greenock, Gourock, Neilston, the Ants, the Bens, Pollok and, maybe, Yoker.

Re: Introductions?

John Buchanan, aged 60. Heart of Midlothian fan from Johnstone, Renfrewshire, working at the University of Glasgow. For the past 10 years I've been intent on publishing a book about Scottish International goalkeepers, but there always appears to be something that distracts me, and the research is pu...

Re: Picture - Queen's Park 1900?

Like Alan, my first thought was that it was long after 1900.

Could it be taken at the White City? If so, it would be post 1928.

Re: Hearts ten up

The feat of HMFC in scoring 10 on Saturday is all the more remarkable, in that none of the goals came from a header. Also, no goals were scored in the first 25 minutes nor the last 15 minutes, which means that the 10 goals were scored in a fifty minute period.

Re: Old Firm 1979

Thanks, folks. Memory must be slipping.

I remember taking an old BlueNose friend of mine to the revamped stadium for the match against Cologne, Schumacher et al., at the start of 1982-83.

Re: Auckland City

Last month, for the second consecutive year I attended the World Club Cup in Morocco. The South Americans certainly do take the tournament seriously. Last year Atletico Mineiro, Ronaldinho and all, brought over 12,000 fans, only to get gubbed, and I mean gubbed, in the semi-final by Raja Casablanca....

Indulge me a wee bit longer. Ibrox available for European Cup tie against Cologne in March and again for Cup Winners Cup against Lillestrom in August. What was being "reconstructed"?

Old Firm 1979

5th May 1979 Rangers v. Celtic Scottish Premier League at Hampden Park.

This is in my era, yet I cannot, for the life of me, remember why the match did not took place at Ibrox.

Enlighten me, please.
