Re: Ireland v Scotland 20th March 1886

Worth adding Lorettonians are FPs of Loretto School, Musselburgh.

Didn't someone here once spot Airdrie listed in a Spanish newspaper as "Ayr Draconians" or similar?

Re: Who would you classify as the big Scottish clubs?

I feel the current 'big' clubs are those who've been top division mainstays from late 1990s (until a few years ago anyway):

Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Kilmarnock, Motherwell

Scottish League games at non-league grounds

There is a thread - two actually - over on P&B where people are discussing groundshares. Over the years there have of course been quite a variety of groundshares and it is surprising how many games before the wars were played at other grounds as a one-off. If anyone uses P&B, they might like to cont...

Re: SFL VS Irish League 1905?

That's a puzzler - AFAIA, there were no Scottish League v Irish League inter-league matches in 1905, 1906, 1907 or 1908. Indeed the Scotsman article for the 1909 game specifically says "after a lapse of five years". Even if the 1905 game had been scheduled, caps made, then it was postponed at the la...

Re: Free NLS access to Ancestry and Findmypast

I find the access to Ancestry/Findmypast a bit puzzling tbh... though it will be welcome for anyone who can make use of it in the next few weeks. Have they just teamed-up with those companies during periods in which they're offering free trials anyway? NLS obviously pays fees to get access to online...

Re: Heriot-Watt University FC

There's an article in one of the 'Scottish Non League Histories' volumes produced by Stewart Davidson the 1990s. Can't recall anything else. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in October, but it transpired during the organising they were actually founded in 1930s, so presumably some research was...

Re: A Couple of Queries

Senior football did not fully close down during the war, of course... come 1941-42 there were 23 of the 38 SFL clubs playing (plus Rangers 'A'), and towards the end of the war this increased with the NE League going up to 10 clubs and a Glasgow & District Reserve League starting. I'm sure I read som...

Re: Edinburgh University FC & Spartans FC - Old Ground

I think I'm right in saying that the original university recreation ground was on the site of the current Scottish Parliament, prior to it becoming a gasworks then brewery? I'm sure I've seen it as marked as that on an old map, although I'm not 100%. Presumably it was originally used for cricket. In...

Re: Making Scottish Football Better

Many players will be paid for participating in games, with "appearances bonuses". In addition to that, there would be a queue of lawyers lining-up to argue that their non-Scottish clients were being disadvantaged by the fact that clubs wouldn't sign them in the first place: in order to keep down the...

Re: Clubs Reforming

I'm right in saying that this was simply a renaming though. Looking at their website there seems to be no honours list claiming the old Airdrieonians titles (nor indeed the Clydebank titles which the SFL was always assiduous in assigning), and the history page goes through all the travails. Did they...

Re: Hall of Fame

As noted by ScottishFA - it doesn't seem like the SFA actually make anything of the 'Roll of Honour' or whatever it was called latterly. I've no doubt that this is in part due to the fact that the increased number of internationals per annum over the last 20yrs or so has 'flooded' what was a fairly ...

It seems SFA aren't bothered until SPFL clubs enter. R2 from today's Scotsman : Annan-Berwick ... 404 Brora-Arbroath ... 547 Clachnacuddin-Linlithgow ... 310 Cumbernauld-Auchinleck ... 487 East Fife-Stirling Albion ... 504 East Kilbride-Forres ... 329 Edinburgh City-Buckie ... 221 Elgin-Spartans ......

Re: Scottish Football League Results

Recall this being mentioned before but the opposition in 1955 was actually Staevnet (the Copenhagen FA XI; also played in the Fairs Cup) and not the Danish Combination or Danish League as carried in the British press. I also read that some Hibs players missed their European Cup return v Rot Weiss Es...
