Re: Replays / Extra-time in 1946-47 Scottish Cup

True. Difficult to say which was the chicken and which the egg - the Southern League had all games on Saturdays as the purpose of the sections was to replace the loss of league games (30 instead of 38); however from 1949-50, not long after the ban, the sections moved to Sat-Wed-Sat Sat-Wed-Sat inste...

Re: Replays / Extra-time in 1946-47 Scottish Cup

Thanks. I had a Google about it myself yesterday, and while I didn't find anything about the Scottish Cup explicitly I did find some references and book extracts suggesting the ban remained in place until spring 1948. Unusually, there only appears to have been 1 replay in the entirety of the 1947-48...

Replays / Extra-time in 1946-47 Scottish Cup

While checking something in Byrne's Scottish Cup results book I happened to notice a couple of odds things in the first Scottish Cup after WWII. Third Round - Hearts v Cowdenbeath was played a couple of weeks after the R3 other ties. Despite being a first tie it went to extra-time which saw Hearts p...

Re: Why did pre-season friendlies start in 1966?

Cheers, so it was a change in regulations.

I wondered if stopping the Summer Cup and thus relengthening the summer break was connected i.e. not playing into May/June enabled starting late July/early August with friendlies.

Why did pre-season friendlies start in 1966?

Thread on the history section of NLM caused me to observe this phenomenon.

http://nonleaguematters.co.uk/forum/gfo ... 829#680829

What was the reason - change in regulations? Attempts to capitalise on WC 1966? End of the Summer Cup?

Re: What's the earliest film of Scotland in action?

I imagine that must be a very likely candidate for the earliest. That 1907 footage has been known of in some form for a while - there's a clip from it on the LondonHearts website and it was mentioned in a thread on here in 2005. Footage exists of the 1911 international at Everton, that's the only ot...

Superb line-up of speakers.

I hadn't a clue such an event was happening, would've gone but can't make it at 12hrs notice sadly.

Re: Scottish Cup 2015-16

Their media department haven't a clue nowadays, it's embarrassing. From another article, headlining SFA website: Edinburgh side Lothian Thistle HV and Dumfriesshire’s Wigtown & Bladnoch have also benefitted from the changes that will see the East of Scotland, South of Scotland and Amateur Cup champi...

Re: Scottish Cup 2015-16

They will have to do something about the format for next season. If 6 or more additional clubs get licensed there would be more clubs wanting into R1 than spaces, even before you considered unlicensed clubs and qualifiers. (And 6 or more isn't unlikely - Cove and Vale of Leithen is 2; then you've go...

Re: Erskine Hospital Charity Cup

According to the most recent edition of 'The Winners' by Bernard Stocks... who was probably using the trophy engraving as his source, although possibly press reports or a club history... it ran from 1949-50 to 1993-94 inclusive. Arthurlie won it on six occasions, according to his list: 1954-55 1975-...

Re: Bathgate Park, Edinburgh

Unless the work has progressed at the Canongate development - you can get a good idea of what the park looked like right now, as the site of the bus garage was cleared a few years ago. http://www.edinburgharchitecture.co.uk/images/jpgs/caltongate_site_aw240209_2.jpg http://www.edinburgharchitecture....

Re: Scottish Cup 2015-16

Presumably that would depend on Central Park's availability: they might not want it played on 2 days running, or stock cars might be using it. If not then it would need to be one of the other Fife SPFL grounds or Burntisland, if the rule as applied as per the rulebook. According to the SFA website b...
