Both Jardine & Matheson were very much instrumental in the start of the Opium Wars.

However, in spite of the tenuous connection with the 'Barcelona Bears', I cannot see Jardine Matheson getting involved in the 2015 Ibrox Boardroom War.

Danny Malloy RIP

Some forum members might have noticed, Danny Malloy, the former Dundee, Cardiff City, Doncaster Rovers and Clyde centre-half of the 1950s and 1960s has died. When I was writing his obituary, his son Andy told me of how, when playing for Cardiff against Middlesbrough, fed-up with Brian Clough mouthi...

Re: Jimmy Dunn Junior RIP

Thanks for the heads-up on this bluedragon. A full obituary on Jimmy has now been written and will appear later this month in one of the major Scottish newspapers - he is one little-known Anglo-Scot, whose story deserves to be printed. Jimmy's son Peter was telling me, his Dad's final months, in a ...

Re: Most tasteless club name?

Bud Neill was a Dunfermline Athletic fan. I well recall one cartoon, where below a drawing of a Dunfermline fan, carrying a banner on which was written: "Pars For The Cup", the caption said: "A youth who bore midst snow and ice, a banner with this strange device". Then, of course. there was his leg...

Re: First Penalty Kick

How disappointing, to learn the first penalty kick in Scotland was NOT awarded, to Rangers, in a home game, tied at 0-0 with a couple of minutes to go. I would thought that was a given!!

Re: Most tasteless club name?

The old South Ayrshire Junior League, of which my maternal grand-father was president, had some exotic, and tasteful names. Leaving aside the immortal Glenbuck Cherrypickers, we have Benwhat Heatherbell and Rankinston Mountaineers - what a glorious description of their pitch that is. Clearly, from ...

Re: Arthur Montford

Gentlemen, Enough of this salacious inuendo. Scottish, being a well-brought-up boy from Troon and a Killie fan, would be too-much of a gentleman to ever give even a whiff of any improper behavious towards the young ladies in the Western SMT office. In any case, they, being Kilmarnock ladies, would ...

Re: Arthur Montford

Arthur was always an absolute gentleman. He telephoned me one evening, to congratulate me on a piece I had written on Scottish ice hockey, and, when I mentioned that my father-in-law had been one of the pioneering Canadian ice hockey professionals in Scotland before World War II, I later got anothe...
