Re: Definition of 'scrimmage'

Might a "scrimmage" be, for want of a better description: "a mass or multi-player stoat-up"?

Re: 1967 and all that!

Should we not also include the fact the Scottish FA squad toured the world unbeaten?

Played 9 - won 9 - drawn 0 - lost 0 - for 33 - against 9.

Re: 1967 and all that!

Re the Great Britain Amateur XI game v Iceland. I recall John Taylor, the QP and GB goalkeeper, telling me once, he, Eddie Hunter and Billy Neil were pulled-out of the squad to travel to Iceland, Queen's needed them for the team to play Cowdenbeath the next day.

Re: Fife Cup

And Cowdenbeath win the Fife Cup by beating Raith Rovers 2-1 in the final at Stark's Park. First time I was ever at a match that was unabandoned! 92 minutes gone Cowden goalie goes to take a goal kick and floodlights fail. After much discussion, ref allows 10 minutes for lighting to be restored. On...

Re: DENIS LAW

Forrest old chap, I fear you may have got your games mixed-up. I think the match in which the referee is pictured, doubled over in pain, with Baxter lurking close by was the Scotland v Uruguay match at Hampden on 2 May, 1962, rather than the Austria game, which was played on 8 May, 1963. Different ...

Re: DENIS LAW

And, of course, Denis was memorably dropped after the 9-3 game, allegedly for kicking Bobby Robson, right in front of the Queen. Denis has always claimed that Robson kicked him first, and I never recall Sir Bobby denying this. English referee Jim Finney is alleged to have said he abandoned the Scot...

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists

Johnny Little died last week, which means a vacancy in our First XI of the Oldest Living Scottish Internationalists. The new "cap" is Lawrie Leslie, born on 17March 19 35. The line-up now reads: Bobby Brown (Rangers) - three caps – 1946/47 : 1951-52: d.o.b. 19/03/1923 Johnny MacKenzie (Partick Thist...

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists

With the death of David Herd, the "new cap" in our First XI of the oldest surviving Scottish internationalists is Rangers' Jimmy Millar. The new line-up is: Bobby Brown (Rangers) - three caps – 1946/47 : 1951-52: d.o.b. 19/03/1923 (obit) Johnny MacKenzie (Partick Thistle) – nine caps - 1953-54 : 19...

Re: C Division Supplementary League, 1948 & 1949

HibeeJibee: I hate to be pedantic, but, you were not quite correct in your tale of what happened in Scottish Rugby last season. Certainly, fixtures were issued for the "Premiership Development Competition", which was supposed to fill-in some blank weeks for the clubs playing at the highest level of...

Re: Football criticism

Alan, It is impossible for those of us alive today, to say how bad that Arthurlie loss was. I understand there were mitigating circumstances, with some of the Celtic players in open dispute with the club. But, I would fancy the present-day Arthurlie team's chances against Lincoln Red Imps, but, I d...

Football criticism

I can recall, as a sports journalist, being chided by the theatre critic of the newspaper for which I then worked, for my use of post-match quotes. "I don't go round backstage after the performance to ask Ian McKellen how he thought he had played - I tell him what I thought in print; I wish you spo...

RIP Jackie McInally

Jackie McInally, one of the Kilmarnock Legends who won the Scottish League in 1965 has died, in his 80th year. Jackie, father of Alan "Rambo" McInally, had been fighting Dementia for some time, but a short illness claimed him at the weekend. He set one record which will probably never be broken. He...

Re: Ireland v Scotland 20th March 1886

I would say this was a definite typo. Loretto being such a small school, and a rugby-playing one at that, does not have an active FP sports team. One or two Scottish rugby internationalists have their club listed as "Fettesians-Lorettonians", rather than just Lorettonians and to this day there is s...

The Offshore Game

Until earlier this week, I had not heard of the website: The Offshore Game. I have since had a look, particularly at their views on the liquidation of Rangers and the fall-out from this. We are, I would suggest, unlikely to see any of the Scottish media outlets mentioning this - they will not go ne...
