David McCaig

David McCaig (26.11.06 - 17.12.82) was a fair-haired wing-half with Raith Rovers and Bristol Rovers. He left Eastville in 1930 to move back north of the border, where he later worked as a coalminer. Does anyone know which club(s) he played for from 1930? If it helps, he died in Carluke, his place of...

Robert Fleming Archibald

I have been asked by a friend to enquire re-Robert Fleming Archibald, who apparently played once for Hibernian in the 1912-13 season. Does anyone have dates of birth/death, any idea of date and opposition for this one game and any further info on his career (other clubs? other games?). All help much...

Anglo-Scots v Home Scots

William Clark (1881-1937), the future Sunderland and Leicester man, then with Bristol Rovers, was due to play for the Anglo-Scots against the Home Scots at Cathkin Park, 19 March 1906, but pulled out. Does anyone know if he ever did play for the Anglo-Scots?

Re: Three Scots

Thank you for all these answers. If anyone knows Sam McMillan's date of birth, I would be interested in due course. Thanks again.

Three Scots

Hoping for some information, please: Andy Penman appears to have made his Scottish League debut for Dundee, aged 15, during the 1958-59 season. Does anyone have his date of birth and the date of his first game? Likewise, Sam McMillan was 15 when he played for Ayr Utd in 1952-53 - again, does anyone ...

Re: Seven different scorers

How reassuring to read my sort of question when I logged on this evening! This is exactly the sort of thing I wonder about. The answer is, I suppose, that no one really knows. My records are mainly south of the border and I can say that, unless I have miscalculated, not one of the current 92 League ...

Re: Walter Bird

One final question, as I have asked too many in the last month or so on this forum .... You haven't asked too many. That's what this forum is for. There's a new A-Z of Kilmarnock players, written by Richard Cairns and Gordon Allison, scheduled for publication next month. I don't know if it has the ...

Re: Half-time scores

On a similar theme, Thornley of Hamilton scored five first-half goals, but his side didn't win. This was 4 Oct 1919, Hamilton Acc (5)5 Raith R (2)5. Has any individual player scored six first-half goals in a Scottish league game (I can't find a match reprot online for Jimmy McGrory or any of the fou...

Re: Walter Bird

Thanks. He joined Rovers on 12 May 1920 and you are correct about the first line-up and first league hat-trick. One of his two Notts County League goals was at Old Trafford (2-2 draw, 30 Jan 1915, Div One). His Hearts debut hat-trick was against Queen's Park (5-2), 12 Aug 1924. In the 1891 census, s...

Walter Bird

One final question, as I have asked too many in the last month or so on this forum .... Walter Smith Bird (born 3q 1891 Hugglescote, Leics - died 2.3.1965 Coalville, Leics) bucked the 1920s trend and was an english-born player north of the border. Does anyone have an exact date of birth for him? (th...

Re: Mick Cosgrove

Thanks, Tom, the newspaper report I read stated that Cosgrove and Granger both joined the day before the game and both were expected to make their debuts against Falkirk. Clearly, Cosgrove's chance never materialised. Thanks for your help with this.

Mick Cosgrove

Michael Docherty Cosgrove (known understandably as "Mick" and less understandably as "Jack") apparently made his debut for Celtic on 17 Feb 1923 in a goalless draw at Falkirk. Does anyone know exactly how many games (and goals?) he scored for the Celts that season? He left in May 1923 for the Americ...

Re: Fred Forbes

Many thanks. His goal was at home to Partick Thistle in Jan 1932 - Leith lost 3-1. Does anyone have apps/gls for him at Hearts, 1919-22 or at Airdrie, 1933-34?

Fred Forbes

Fred Forbes enjoyed a long career north and south of the border, making quite a name for himself at Hearts. Does anyone on this forum know how many games/goals he managed for Leith Athletic in 1931-32 or have a date and place of death for him?
