Re: Late Victorian Scots

Hi, I may, of course, have completely the 'wrong' man in terms of who you're looking for; but, given the Bristol Rovers connection, maybe not... Here's the profile for William Clark from the latest, third edition of LCFC history 'Of Fossils & Foxes' (2010): you'll note that neither of the clubs you...

David Smellie

Very interested in any comments on the life and career of the delightfully-named David Smellie. A centre-forward, Richard David Smellie was, I believe, born in Bo'ness around 1872. One report I read suggests he was at Northern in 1890-91. He was with Albion Rovers, Motherwell, Albion Rovers again, 1...

Re: Late Victorian Scots

Thank you, Paul and Steve, for your comments. Very interested in anything else anyone can add. Robert McIntyre is listed in Abercorn's line-ups for five Scottish league games in 1900-01, as far as I can see (13 Oct v Leith, 10 Nov v St Bernard's, 24 Nov v Airdrie, 1 Dec v Pt Glasgow, 8 Dec v Clyde) ...

Late Victorian Scots

Hoping for a few ideas about four Scottish players from the turn of the century, all of whom headed south during their careers. Very grateful for any input - dates of birth/death, career alterations, especially numbers of games/goals in Scottish League matches. 1. William Clarke - born approx 1880, ...

1905 Scottish Cup Final

Does anyone here have line-ups accessible for the 1905 Scottish Cup Final, please? In particular, I am wondering if John Chalmers played for Rangers that day (he was in the Clyde side for the 1910 final) and if John McInnes was in the Third Lanark side. I am also assuming that Frank Roberts didn't p...

Sam Irving

Does anyone know details about the end of Sam Irving's playing career? Samuel Johnstone Irving (28 Aug 1894 - 17 Jan 1969) was born in Belfast of Scottish parentage and won eighteen caps for Northern Ireland, as well as winning an FA Cup winners' medal with Cardiff City in 1927 and winning promotion...

Re: McNairn

Thank you for this information. My grandmother also mentioned Morton, so this sounds like the correct David Stevenson. As for the two McNairns - those are the two I was thinking of, but the 1960 player does appear a bit of a mystery.

McNairn

In researching my family tree, I am fortunate that my mother's maiden name is the relatively rare McNairn. I have noted that one McNairn joined Albion Rovers from Ashfield in 1960 and played once in goal during 1960-61. There was another McNairn pottering around the non-league circuit in the 1890s, ...

Re: Oldest Player

So, perhaps Andy Millen as the oldest outfield player in SFL history.
What about Graeme Armstrong as the oldest SFL goalscorer - 28.11.98 for Stenhousemuir v Albion Rovers (42 yrs 158 days)? Does anyone know of an older scorer?

Re: Debut hat-tricks

I know this is a thread about Scottish football, but Bristol Rovers have three players who have scored a debut League hat-trick: Joe Riley, Rovers 4 Bournemouth 1, 2 Jan 1932 Jimmy McCambridge, Bristol C 0 Rovers 3, 26 Aug 1933 Bobby Gould, Rovers 4 Blackburn R 1, 15 Oct 1977 For obvious reasons, Mc...

George Gane

I am wondering if anyone on here can shed a little light on a mystery? Very enigmatically, the Bristol press in the eraly 1920s says that one of George Gane's transfers constituted a world record fee of £750, but it doesn't say which one. I would love to know! Gane was with Airdrieonians just before...

Re: Kilmarnock and Chesterfield, 1921

Stuart - Michael Joyce's book lists Robert Cook as born in Ardrossan, if that helps narrow down your possibilities. Nothing new on Stirling, unfortunately.

Re: Christmas Day

Apparently, the last Scottish league games on Dec 25th were in 1976 - Clydebank 2 St Mirren 2 and Alloa 2 Cowdenbeath 1.
The last Christmas Day League match in England was in 1959 - Blackburn 1 Blackpool 0 and Coventry 5 Wrexham 3.
