Re: Frank MCGarrity

Litster's pre-war disc gives his first registration at St. Bernards Jun 1914, to Airdrie Nov 1915, returning to St. Bernards Apr 1916. He is shown as transfer-listed by Airdrie for four seasons from 1915-16, although whether he was actually attached to them during this period is unclear. George Par...

Re: Scottish Rovers

It is difficult to understand what the reporter meant when he mentioned Raith Rovers. On 11th April 1931, Muir played in Bristol Rovers' 3-0 win v Norwich City. He joined Rovers on trial on 6th March 1931, made his debut v Fulham on 14th March and signed for £10, reportedly direct from Luton Town fo...

Re: Chic Cairney

Many thanks for the information. I have his date joining Barry Town as August 1951; 8.7.53 to Bristol Rovers; Aug 55 to Headington Utd; only two games for them and both in Aug 55, then off to Worcester City. He was at Worcester early enough to have played in 52 games (2 gls) for them before his move...

Chic Cairney

I would be grateful if anyone here could confirm or add to the Scottish league details of Chic Cairney (well, Charles Cairney really), who was born in Blantyre, 21.9.1926 and died in Airdrie, 25.3.1995. I believe he joined Celtic in 1949 and played once in the League during 1949-50, before moving on...

Re: Three penalties

Four penalty kicks have been awarded in a single game seven times in Scotland as far as I`m aware. The 1st instance I can find was St.Mirren vs. Rangers Division One 9/1/1904 - David Lindsay(St.Mirren) scored 3 and Bob Hamilton(Rangers) scored too. Lindsay was the 1st player to net a hat-trick of s...

Re: Three penalties

The Mark Roberts case is similar to the Damian Spencer story in some respects. He came on as sub for Cheltenham Town at home to MK Dons, 31 Jan 2009. His side trailed 5-0, then he scored a hat-trick and was then sent off. Cheltenham lost 5-3. As I understand it, Forfar Athletic were awarded four sep...

Re: Scottish Rovers

In a shameless attempt to keep this topic alive, in the hope someone might have more information .... Does anyone know anything about the Scottish League career of James Durkan (born Bannockburn, 14.7.1915 - died Glasgow, 10.3.1990)? He started at King's Park, went to Cardiff City in Feb 1934, Brist...

Re: Hugh German

How could any Scottish forum forget Joe Jordan and Alan Brazil? Probably because the question was about wartime and pre-war players. That said, the longest pass in football was undoubtedly when the ball went all the way from Brazil to Jordan. A few years back, Wolves' keeper could pass all the way ...

Re: Hugh German

George Poland played for Cardiff City and Wrexham shortly after World War Two. Ted Pole was with Ipswich Town and Orient at a similar time. Jimmy Denmark played for Newcastle Utd between 1937 and 1939. Mike England was with Spurs through the 1970s. How could any Scottish forum forget Joe Jordan and ...

Re: Scotland players son representing another country

It's not quite an answer to this question, but the Brown family should certainly be mentioned here. Jim (scored for USA in 1930 World Cup semi-final) was a brother of Jock (Scotland); Jim's son George also played for the USA, whilst Jock's sons Peter and Gordon both played rugby for Scotland.

Bill McGregor (born Paisley, 1 Dec 1923) was a full-back who joined Leicester City from Mossdale/Mossvale YMCA in April 1947 (9 FL apps), and played in 119 FL games for Mansfield Town between Sept 1953 and 1956. Jimmy Hernon (born Cleland, 6 Dec 1924) joined Leicester City from the same club in Apri...

Blowing my own trumpet here, but .... Re: Scottish Rovers

Thank you, John, for your answer. David Kenny may, of course, have only been on trial at Falkirk. I will keep searching. In response to your other players: Fred Kemp never made the first-team at Eastville. John Baker Muir - I have a date of death as 29 April 1949 in Hamilton. I believe he was at QoS...
