Re: NLS Visit 2016?

I'm OK.
Would be great if Ian could provide a copy of the Vale of Atholl book produced by George Campbell.

Re: Euro 2016

I would prefer some kind of half-way house, to be honest. 16 is maybe a bit shy given the 50-odd UEFA membership but I think 24 is too many and led to the lowest ever scoring figures for any major competition during the opening two rounds of group fixtures. I'd like to see 20 finalists competing in ...

Re: Euro 2016

Hmmm....I think this upcoming wedding is playing with your grey matter Brian. 6 games in 6 groups = 36 matches! Agree with your general thought, though. Too many cautious matches thus far. 16 is more than enough Euro finalists. Got to question whose daft idea this expansion was! Oh, wait a minute....

Re: New Types of Team in the SPFL Challenge Cup

I'm not convinced by this latest 'revolutionary idea' I'm afraid. Can I see many fans of say Dundee United, Hibernian, Falkirk or Raith Rovers turn up to see their team face Hamilton, Ross County or Partick Thistle U20s? No chance and, quite frankly, embarrassing. Call me cynical, but on the basis t...

Re: Farewell East Stirlingshire

I also attended the last SFL game, for the time being at least, against Edinburgh City and it was a particularly poor effort from the League 2 club. Knowing many followers of The Shire, they appear stoic in their determination to support the club in the LL in the hope that a return could be achieved...

BNA Update

Finally we've got a sports newspaper inclusion that should be of invaluable assistance as the ATHLETIC NEWS is starting to appear on the archive.
It is the English version but Page 5 includes 'Scotch Football Notes' while the occasion match report appears on page 6 or 7.
1882 is available so far.

Re: Thornhill v Clyde Scottish Cup 1924

I'm beginning to wonder if this could be one of those footballing urban myths Gordon. A bit like the Bon Accord - Orion cricket club nonsense, could this have been a case of a memory being embellished, I wonder. It's a pity we're no further forward with even a hint of where the story emanated from. ...

Re: Whifflet Rovers

Nothing in Robin Marwick's Brian. I've checked all the seasons around that time. I'm hoping 1933-34 will appear in the BNA for the Sunday Post soon since they listed hundreds of results from all levels of the game on their scores page. I imagine amateurs but wondering if they could've been a 'ghost ...

Whifflet Rovers

I can't remember if I've posted this before but does anyone have any information on the Whifflet Rovers club. They competed in the Scottish Qualifying Cup in 1933-34 and beat Moorpark Amateurs before losing to Vale Ocoba. I have no idea which league or association that they competed in and was wonde...

I echo everything said here. A very enjoyable morning and a good blether with a number of the guys.
Looking forward to a return visit....with pen and notepad and, of course, NLS membership to hand.

Allowing that Scotrail don't force an unplanned delay upon the trains from Falkirk then I'll be there nice and prompt tomorrow.
Looking forward to it.

Re: Edinburgh University FC & Spartans FC - Old Ground

Canal Field is clearly shown on a couple of pictures on Britain From Above.

SAW032860
This shows three pitches, the top of which I think was the ground used for SC ties by Edinburgh University.

SAW032857
This shows two pitches with the canal clearly visible at the back of the pitches.

Clubs Reforming

I thought I'd bring this contentious subject to the attention of the historians and serious football followers on here. It's a simple question really, but one which has remained unresolved. WHEN IS A CLUB CONSIDERED TO HAVE FOLDED AND ANOTHER ONE FORMED? Both Hibernian and Dumbarton have ceased to p...
