Re: Victory Shield

Far more likely to be the connection with Sky TV threatening to withdraw its coverage and sponsorship, Rob. EFA have attempted to tart this up as some sort of reasoned decision about their youngsters needing more 'exotic' opponents. They actually play other European nations on a regular basis anyway...

Re: William Watson and James McKee, 'foreigners' capped in 1

It's a ridiculous situation Andy. Your sterling efforts, the result of years of research in many instances, is cut and pasted to Wikipedia with a wee footer detailing the source. Yeah, that's commensurate with the effort I'm sure! Unfortunately, I see such happenings leaving the historians little op...

Fan Ownership

I can't believe the latest guff that some MSPs have passed for consideration at Holyrood. They are stating that fans' groups should be granted a virtual 'first refusal' if clubs are put up for sale. Not surprisingly both the SPFL and SFA have criticised the move. Quite how private limited companies ...

Re: Cambuslang FC

After a bit of digging I've found the source. The SFH magazine 58 includes an article reproduced from the Scottish Athletic News of 1888. It details the club's founding and gives more information regarding the match between the two rival village clubs. I've looked through the GH online archive and t...

Cambuslang FC

I found this quote on the Wikipedia page for the long-gone Cambuslang club : The club was founded in 1874 The new football club was named Excelsior with a pitch being laid out in Cambuslang Public Park known locally as Bogshole Park. The new club were challenged by the lads from up the hill from the...

Re: Hearts ten up

On Feb 8th 1964 Kilmarnock beat Falkirk 9-2 in a 1st division match. Killie were 9-0 up after 54 minutes and seven minutes later were awarded a penalty. Brian McIlroy, who had scored four times earlier in the game, sent a tame shot straight to Willie Whigham in the Falkirk goal. Nearly half an hour...

Re: Hearts ten up

Got to admit that I was surprised by the score and, like buses, two come along in quick succession after almost a half-century gap! Also, I did notice that every goal was either in off the post of very near to the post making it difficult for the Cowdenbeath goalkeeper. Saying that, I felt Bobby Mad...

Re: Burnbank Athletic

Thanks Stewart.
I actually had the answer in one of your Lanarkshire Junior League booklets.

Burnbank Athletic

Do any of the junior experts on here know why Burnbank Athletic stopped playing at the end of the 1961-62 season?
I've scoured the Evening Times online and have drawn a blank.
I know East Kilbride Thistle started around this time. Any link?

Re: BNA access for a pound

Very tempting but I've not noticed very much Scottish offerings lately.
I tend to coincide my subscriptions with times when new Scottish titles come on. We appear to be in the BNA's 'Irish period' just now.

Re: League Reorganisation 1915 to 1927

Can anyone explain why The Shire were demoted at the end of 1922-23 and not Arbroath?
After both finished level on points, the Falkirk team had a better goal-average and appear in second-last place in all tables that I've seen.
Was there a SFL vote to determine who fell to the new third tier?

Re: Most tasteless club name?

A couple of additional thoughts. The club from Loch Lomondside was Kilmaronock Thistle...note the slight difference in spelling...and they played near the hamlet of Gartocharn near Drymen. Having run clubs in the amateur leagues over the years, a number of memorable names spring to mind. Following o...

Re: Most tasteless club name?

If this is about 'blandness' then I propose Glaswegian amateurs from the turn of the 20th Century, Normal Athletic.

Now there's an inspiring name although they were actually a club representing a teaching college!

Re: A MATTER OF LIFE & DEATH

Are we getting our Jim Whites muddled up here, David?
I'm not sure if the permatanned, seemingly now cricket-loving, "Brian, why are you so gooood" TV presenter has the ability to write a book, even a poorly researched one.
We could be talking about Jim White the sports writer instead?
