God, is he getting the credit for Paul le Guen as well? Barry Ferguson will be right peed off.

Whoever was responsible appears to have done Rangers an enormous favour. He's not the messiah, he's just a very ordinary coach -

The way Celtic were going to qualify was by picking up 7 to 9 points at home and at best maybe 1 or 2 points away. In this regard Benfica and Shaktar were a good draw, there was always every chance of beating these teams at home. Also, Milan are having a poor season domestically so they were a little vulnerable - and so it proved. So "hardest group" isn't really fair comment - but who listens to managers when they're talking up their team's achievements!

Rangers, though, have only themselves to blame for not progressing. Stuttgart got their only points against the Gers. A win in Germany would have made the final match irrelevant. And given a 2nd chance, they blew it big style and got their biggest home European defeat in a decade.

Hopefully they will have got that out of their system in time for Panathinaikos.
