There was a buzz about Rooney even before David Moyes arrived - rather like Michael Owen at the same age at Liverpool - and Smith was a regular spectator at the games Rooney was playing. Rooney didn't even leave school until after Walter had left Everton.

I still doubt very much that Walter would have given him his debut in the opening game of the 2002-03 season had he still been in charge rather than Moyes.

I can just picture him going to see Bill Kenwright and asking for a few million for some 'hotshot' Eastern European striker with a lengthy injury history rather than field a boy straight out of school.

Back to the Lyon match - Rangers are making a habit of not getting the result they need on the last matchday, even at home - does this mean a lack of "character"? Bring back Jock Wallace! Gullane sands and all.
