Consecutive Goalscoring Feats

Post by John Meffen » Sat Oct 31, 2009 1:20 pm

I'm not saying this is the record, but just a starting point

Evelyn Morrison scored in 16 consecutive league matches from 3rd Nov 1928 to 23rd Feb 1929

does anybody know of comparable [or better] feats of goalscoring?

In Scotland, that is! [as interesting as Arthur Friedenreich's exploits in the São Paulo State League [or whatever] in 1921 [or whenever], it's not really the same thing]

Bobby Lennox scored in 13 successive Division One games for Celtic (21 goals) between 2/3/1968 and 7/9/1968.

I think the post-1975 reconstruction top flight record is Marco Negri who scored in the opening ten matches of 1997-98.

that's something I ought add, watch out for somebody scoring with one team at the end of a season then starting again with another the next

Mark Viduka also scored in 10 consecutives games, a couple of seasons after Negri, in 1999/2000.

Would Rudi Skácel's feat of scoring in his first seven games for Hearts be an SPL record then?

Might be for consecutive scoring from the beginning of a player's SPL career but Viduka would appear to hold the record for most consecutive scoring games.

Negri was the last pre-SPL season though.

Mega-bump.

As far as I can see Evelyn Morrison scored in 14 games running (League + Scottish Cup tie v St Bernard's) in late 1928 and early 1929.

Finn Dossing is said to have scored in 15 consecutive games for Dundee United in 1964-65 - excluding 2 games where he didn't play - although the Dundee United Official Centenary History seems to show 13, or 14 including a friendly.

Bobby Lennox scored in 13 games running for Celtic at the end of 1967-68 (League + Glasgow Cup Final).

Do we know the Scottish (British) record for scoring goals in consecutive games... is it Morrison? Dossing? AN Other?

Scott McLean holds our club record for scoring in consecutive matches. He broke the long standing Jimmy Walker (1949 & 1950) / Joe McBride (1961) joint record when he netted in 8 matches in a row between 16-Sep-2000 and 04-Nov-2000. I know this doesn't compete but I do like an excuse to test out my Thistle stats. Please forgive me!

Also, there are other ways to look at this type of run...

Neil Harris once went four and a half months as an ever present on the Thistle scoresheet - if we scored he scored. His record-breaking run resulted in 21 goals over 23 games between 18-Oct-1919 and 06-Mar-1920, 15 goalscoring games in total. His prolific exploits didn't go un-noticed and he was snapped up by Newcastle United for £3,300 in May 1920.

Not quite top level, but Keith McLeod of Spartans has reportedly scored in his last 14 matches, and the run could continue. One to watch.

Looking at the Fitba Stats site http://www.fitbastats.com/celtic/player ... 438&page=3

It lists James McGrory as scoring in 14 consecutive league games, from the start of the 1935/1936 season. It looks as though he missed the 9th, 10th & 11th games of the season through injury (most likely) but scored 24 in the 14 consecutive league games he played in.

Unsurprisingly it's Henry Morris who holds the record for East Fife, scoring in 11 consecutive league games between 13th March and 14th August 1948. The same player also scored in 11 consecutive league appearances earlier in 1947-48.
More recently Gordon Durie found the net in each of the last 8 league games of season 1983-84...
