It was 3-2 he says pedantically, leaving Celtic needing to avoid a 16-0 defeat at East End Park to secure the title.

Thanks for correcting my memory !!!

A few days later Dunfermline, as Cup winners, entertained Celtic, the Champions elect (unless the lost by the amount quoted above) at East End Park for the final league match of 1967-68 season.

That set a record home attendance.

Unfortunately there were crowd problems due to the sheer numbers that turned up and one man was tragically accidentally killed trying to enter the ground.

A pensioner fell off the roof of a nearby garage and died. The match was stopped twice. Fans were cleared off the roof. Crush barriers collapsed. 49 were treated for injuries with fifteen taken to hospital. The late Hugh Taylor, who had seen a thing or two in a long career, claimed this match had "the most terrifying moments Scottish football has known."

Of course Taylor wasn't to know what was going to unfold at Ibrox less than three years later.

That was DAFC's record home attendance - although the official gate numbers were swollen by many who managed to get in free.

One such fan sent Dunfermline a postal order for 5 old shillings (25 pence nowadays) a few days later - that was the gate admission for Division One then.
