Larsson v Boyd

Post by Richard Rae » Fri May 14, 2010 7:15 am

Hi all it's my first go so please be gentle.
My records show that larsson scored more goals for Celtic than Boyd has for Rangers but on most forums Rangers fans goad Celtic fans that Boyd holds the record therefor is the greater scorer. Anyone help?

Boyd holds a very specific record in that it only takes account of SPL goals which means Larsson's goals in his first season 1997/98 are not counted as the SPL did not start until 1998/99.

If Boyd signs another contract at Rangers then over time he would surpass Larsson's league goals record.

However, there is more chance of East Sirling winning the SPL than there is of Boyd beating Larsson's Old Firm goals tally or his Euro goals or International goals totals.

I make Larsson ahead on every count

Larsson scored 173 league goals in Scotland. Boyd has scored 164, all in the SPL.

Larsson scored 169 SPL goals,

All of Larsson's goals were for Celtic. 101 of Boyd's for Rangers and 63 for Kilmarnock.

Thanks for the qick response, but alas, I'm more confused :? :?
I have Larsson scoring 174 goals for Celtic.
Also, If season 1997-98 doesn't count, I have Larsson at 158 SPL goals as he scored 16 in the league that season.

Sorry, my mistake. Larsson has 157 SPL goals & Boyd 164.

Larsson scored 173 league goals for Celtic. He has been attributed by many sources with a goal which was actually quite a blatant OG. Forrest Robertson has posted the details here before but I can't remember when.

Similarly, while Boyd's tally of 164 is correct now, there was a long period in which his Killie tally was cited as 64, not 63 with a Kevin McGowne goal in a league match at Easter Road being commonly given to Boyd.

So, to summarise:

Larsson has scored more goals
Larsson has scored more league goals in Scotland
Boyd has scored more goals in the SPL
Larsson has scored more for Celtic than Boyd has for Rangers
Larsson has scored more for Celtic in the SPL than Boyd has for Rangers.

Hope this clears it up.

Aye but who is the better player? And should Boyds goals for Killie not count as double given that its easy to score for the OF?

Any more thoughts on which goal this was?

I did a search on the forum but couldn't find anything

See here

Specifically, the post from leatherstocking at 9.02 pm n Mon 4th Dec 2006.

I don't know how you ran your search but a search on Google using site:www.scottishleague.net and the appropriate search term(s) should only throw up results from this site.

Thanks for the response David.

This is the Sporting Life view of the goal:

But Celtic made it 3-0 in the 56th minute when O'Donnell swung in a cross from the left and Henrik Larsson got in a downward header at the far post which seemed destined for the net.

Irvine did well to hook the ball off the line only for it to hit Douglas' leg before trickling back into the net.

I seem to recall there was a view that the ball had crossed the line before Irvine played the ball.

I will check the Celtic View for their description of the goal and some newspapers when I'm at the Mitchell within the next couple of weeks.

I guess we'll be better able to judge when Boyd gets snapped up by Barcelona.
