scottish wrote:Fair point. My error. I can find 39 sub-500 home league attendances (not including Ross County), the first ones coming as surprisingly early as April 1967 - 444 v Queen's Park, 19/4/67 & 392 v East Stirlingshire 22/4/67. There was a crowd of 491 v Stirling Albion on 2/5/1979 and the other 36 were in the 1980s and 1990s. Perhaps surprisingly there were more (22) in the 1990s than the 1980s (14). The lowest - the Ross County match aside - is 310 v Arbroath 20/3/1993
Yeah, I'm not actually that surprised about that. I said "mid-80's" before without really thinking about it in true years terms. I tend to think of the Harkness era as being 80's and before but he was in charge right up to about 1994. In fact the 80's weren't that bad with two promotions and four seasons being spent in the first division so crowds were likely to be better than they were in the early 90's on average I expect. Our crowds (and fortunes) picked up after Norman Blount took over in 1995.

I'll need to have a look at the detail from that Arbroath match and see if I can find out why the gate was that low. I was probably there. I won't have missed more than half a dozen home weekend games since 1991. I'll look at my records at home later if I get time.

Going into the Arbroath game on the back of five successive defeats and six losses and two draws in the past eight might have had something to do with it.

Looking at the League Cup, every club bar one of the 47 which have contested it at some time or other (counting ES Clydebank as East Stirling and Airdrieonians and Airdrie United as separate clubs) has produced a four-figure home gate:

1,000+
178 Rangers
170 Celtic
167 Aberdeen, Hibernian
163 Dundee United
159 Dundee
157 Kilmarnock
153 Hearts
152 Dunfermline Athletic, St Johnstone
146 Motherwell
145 Partick Thistle
144 Ayr United
142 St Mirren
140 Falkirk, Morton
135 Queen of the South
129 Airdrieonians, Raith Rovers
121 East Fife
116 Clyde
112 Hamilton Academical, Stirling Albion
107 Arbroath
99 Dumbarton
90 Alloa Athletic
82 Queen’s Park
80 Cowdenbeath
66 Albion Rovers
65 Forfar Athletic
64 Third Lanark
58 Montrose
57 Stenhousemuir
56 Stranraer
53 Berwick Rangers
48 Clydebank
38 East Stirlingshire
35 Brechin City
21 Livingston
15 Inverness CT, Ross County
5 Airdrie United
4 Peterhead
3 Leith Athletic
1 Annan Athletic, Gretna
0 Elgin City

Looking at crowds above 5,000 again, almost every club (41) is there

5,000+
177 Rangers
169 Celtic
162 Aberdeen
146 Hibernian
138 Hearts
119 Dundee United
114 Dundee
102 Kilmarnock
92 Dunfermline Athletic
87 Motherwell
85 Partick Thistle, St Johnstone
81 Morton
78 St Mirren
76 Ayr United
70 Falkirk
60 Airdrieonians
59 Clyde
56 Raith Rovers
54 Queen of the South
52 East Fife
51 Third Lanark
43 Stirling Albion
35 Hamilton Academical
24 Queen’s Park
22 Dumbarton
19 Cowdenbeath
17 Arbroath
14 Albion Rovers
11 Alloa Athletic
6 Clydebank
5 Forfar Athletic
3 Livingston, Stenhousemuir
2 East Stirlingshire, Leith Athletic, Ross County
1 Berwick Rangers, Inverness CT, Montrose, Stranraer

The picture changes when we get to five-figure crowds with just under two-thirds (30) having had at least one crowd of 10,000 or more

10,000+
165 Rangers
155 Celtic
118 Aberdeen
92 Hearts
90 Hibernian
74 Dundee
57 Partick Thistle
54 Dundee United
52 St Mirren
51 Kilmarnock
48 Motherwell
42 Clyde
31 Third Lanark
30 Falkirk
29 Airdrieonians
26 East Fife, Morton
23 Raith Rovers
21 Dunfermline Athletic
20 Queen of the South
13 Ayr United
11 Stirling Albion
8 Hamilton Academical, St Johnstone
4 Albion Rovers, Queen’s Park
3 Cowdenbeath, Dumbarton
2 Clydebank
1 Alloa Athletic

And by the time we get to 20,000 or more we are down to fewer than half (20)

20,000+
142 Rangers
116 Celtic
55 Hearts
47 Hibernian
41 Aberdeen
32 Partick Thistle
30 Dundee
15 Third Lanark
13 Motherwell
12 St Mirren
10 Clyde
9 Kilmarnock
5 Dundee United
4 Airdrieonians, Raith Rovers
2 Dunfermline Athletic, Stirling Albion
1 Cowdenbeath, Morton, Queen’s Park

Only thirteen clubs have had gates of 30,000 or higher

30,000+
111 Rangers
66 Celtic
23 Hearts
20 Hibernian
15 Aberdeen
13 Partick Thistle
6 Third Lanark
4 St Mirren
3 Dundee
2 Motherwell
1 Clyde, Kilmarnock, Queen’s Park

And at the 40,000 mark we go down to just seven

40,000+
68 Rangers
33 Celtic
10 Hibernian
5 Hearts
3 Aberdeen
2 St Mirren, Third Lanark

50,000 leaves us with three

50,000+
32 Rangers
19 Celtic
2 Hibernian

And after that it's the usual suspects

60,000+
20 Rangers
10 Celtic

70,000+
12 Rangers
4 Celtic

80,000+
5 Rangers

90,000+
3 Rangers

100,000+
1 Rangers

Figures are for home games irrespective of whether or not the venue was switched on account of the home club's ground being too small for the anticipated crowd.

Scottish Cup home crowds. Note: These are for existing league clubs, based on figures from 1890 (establishment of the Scottish League) onwards and no always 100% in every case. Every club has had several four-figure gates. Same caveats as per the League Cup. If it was a home tie then it is included irrespective of whether or not there was a ground switch. Hence Morton having a 50,000+ gate. (it was for a match v Clyde at Ibrox). Figures to end of January 2012.

1,000+
201 Celtic
195 Rangers
183 Hearts

6 Stirling Albion
5 Alloa Athletic, Stenhousemuir
3 Berwick Rangers, Elgin City
2 East Stirlingshire
1 Arbroath, Forfar Athletic, Inverness CT

Even at 20,000+ there are still 25 clubs

20,000+
139 Celtic
134 Rangers

2 Clyde
1 Morton

Then down to five at 50,000

50,000+
49 Rangers
25 Celtic
5 Queen’s Park
3 Hearts
1 Morton

And we are are left with Glasgow clubs only at 60,000

60,000+
31 Rangers
9 Celtic
2 Queen’s Park

Same at 70,000

70,000+
15 Rangers
4 Celtic
1 Queen’s Park

And at 80,000

80,000+
12 Rangers
1 Celtic
1 Queen’s Park

Just two at 90,000 but one of them is a surprise

90,000+
5 Rangers
1 Queen’s Park

And only one club has a six-figure crowd

100,000+
1 Rangers

At the other end just over two-thirds of present league clubs have recorded at least one sub-1,000 gate. There are a couple of surprising names amongst them but gates were much lower in the 1890s than in subsequent decades and that explains the presence of SPL luminaries such as Celtic and St Mirren.

-1,000
41 Brechin City, Cowdenbeath
39 Stenhousemuir
35 Albion Rovers, East Stirlingshire
34 Stranraer
31 Forfar Athletic, Montrose
27 Alloa Athletic
26 Berwick Rangers
25 East Fife
23 Queen’s Park, Stirling Albion
19 Livingston
15 Arbroath
14 Dumbarton
13 Clyde
11 Peterhead
9 Elgin City
6 Hamilton Academical, Queen of the South
5 Annan Athletic
3 Airdrie United, Ross County
2 Ayr United
1 Celtic, Morton, Raith Rovers, St Mirren
0 Aberdeen, Dundee, Dundee United, Dunfermline Athletic, Falkirk, Hearts, Hibernian, Inverness CT, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Partick Thistle, Rangers, St Johnstone

Just over half the clubs (22) have had a crowd of under 500.

-500

Figures for current non-league and former clubs, both league and non-league. There are so many of these that to give any meaningful figures I have, in addition to the post-1890 rule, only included clubs for which I have figures for at least ten home matches 1890-2012. That means excluding famous names of the past such as Renton and Vale of Leven as well as many current non-league clubs.

1,000+
106 Third Lanark
101 Airdrieonians
44 Inverness Caledonian
42 St Bernard’s
32 Leith Athletic
30 Buckie Thistle
29 Clydebank (2)
28 Bo’ness
21 King’s Park
20 Port Glasgow Athletic
14 Armadale, Huntly
13 Bathgate, Clachnacuddin, Inverness Thistle
12 Arthurlie, Fraserburgh, Vale of Leven
11 Ayr FC, Beith, Forres Mechanics, Galston
10 Clydebank (1), Keith
9 Deveronvale, Royal Albert
8 Gala Fairydean
7 Vale of Leithen
5 Cove Rangers, Nairn County
4 Coldstream, Gretna, Nithsdale Wanderers, St Cuthbert Wanderers
3 Spartans
2 Glasgow University, Inverurie Loco Works, Whitehill Welfare
1 Civil Service Strollers, Edinburgh City (2), Threave Rovers

5,000+
75 Third Lanark
64 Airdrieonians
18 St Bernard’s
15 Leith Athletic
12 Inverness Caledonian
9 Clydebank (2)
8 Armadale
7 Bo’ness, Buckie Thistle
6 Bathgate, King’s Park
4 Arthurlie, Clydebank (1)
3 Forres Mechanics, Keith, Port Glasgow Athletic
2 Clachnacuddin, Fraserburgh, Vale of Leven
1 Inverness Thistle, Royal Albert, Whitehill Welfare

10,000+
47 Third Lanark
35 Airdrieonians
6 St Bernard’s
4 Leith Athletic
3 Clydebank (1)
1 Armadale, Clydebank (2), Keith, Port Glasgow Athletic, Whitehill Welfare

20,000+
23 Third Lanark
10 Airdrieonians
1 Clydebank (1), St Bernard’s

After this there is only one team left

30,000+
9 Third Lanark

40,000+
5 Third Lanark

50,000+
1 Third Lanark

Final sets of figures for this thread (I think). Average league attendances, banded as per previous stats. Usual caveats apply regarding early years and lack of information for some teams. So totals may not tally with the number of seasons played in some cases (for example Motherwell are one season short) I have excluded clubs that played only in the Third Division 1923-26 on grounds of lack of information.

Every club has recorded at least one four-figure average except the three newest league members still playing plus one 1890s club. Four clubs have reached this target in every single season.

1,000+
114 Celtic, Hearts, Rangers, St Mirren
111 Hibernian, Morton, Partick Thistle
110 Motherwell
109 Dundee, Kilmarnock
101 Falkirk
98 Aberdeen, Airdrieonians
96 Clyde
94 Ayr United, Hamilton Academical
93 Raith Rovers
86 Dundee United, St Johnstone
83 Dunfermline Athletic
75 Dumbarton
72 Queen of the South
68 Third Lanark
59 Queen’s Park
54 East Fife
51 Arbroath
47 Cowdenbeath
45 Albion Rovers
41 Alloa Athletic
40 Stirling Albion
39 East Stirlingshire
38 St Bernard’s
36 Forfar Athletic
34 Leith Athletic
33 Montrose
26 Stenhousemuir
24 Clydebank (2)
21 Brechin City
20 Abercorn
18 King’s Park
17 Inverness CT, Port Glasgow Athletic, Ross County, Vale of Leven
15 Livingston
14 Stranraer
13 Berwick Rangers, Clydebank (1)
12 Arthurlie, Ayr FC
11 Bo’ness
8 Airdrie United
7 Armadale
6 Bathgate, Renton
5 Broxburn United, Johnstone, Linthouse
4 Lochgelly United, Nithsdale Wanderers
3 Ayr Parkhouse, Clackmannan, Cowlairs, Gretna
2 Cambuslang
1 Edinburgh City, Northern
0 Annan Athletic, Elgin City, Peterhead, Thistle

At 5,000 or more fully one-third of present day clubs are missing. There are 28 current clubs and six former clubs and only Celtic have reached this target in every league season.

5,000+
114 Celtic
113 Rangers
111 Hearts
105 Hibernian
95 Aberdeen
88 Dundee
87 Motherwell
76 St Mirren
75 Kilmarnock
72 Partick Thistle
68 Dundee United
58 Falkirk
55 Third Lanark
50 Queen’s Park
47 Clyde
41 Dunfermline Athletic
39 Morton
37 Ayr United
35 St Johnstone
33 Raith Rovers
31 Airdrieonians
20 Queen of the South
16 Hamilton Academical
13 East Fife
11 Stirling Albion
9 Albion Rovers
6 Clydebank (1)
3 Cowdenbeath, Livingston, St Bernard’s
2 Dumbarton
1 Inverness CT, Leith Athletic, Port Glasgow Athletic

Of the 28 current clubs that have averaged 5,000, 22 have also recorded five-figure averages at least once, as have two former clubs.

10,000+
107 Celtic
105 Rangers
81 Hearts
78 Aberdeen
59 Hibernian
36 Partick Thistle
32 Dundee
20 St Mirren
14 Motherwell
13 Kilmarnock, Queen’s Park
12 Dundee United, Third Lanark
11 Clyde, Falkirk
7 Raith Rovers
5 East Fife, Queen of the South
4 Morton
3 Airdrieonians
2 Dunfermline Athletic, Stirling Albion
1 Ayr United, St Johnstone

But only seven clubs have averaged 20,000 or more.

20,000+
77 Rangers
57 Celtic
16 Hearts
11 Hibernian
5 Dundee
3 Aberdeen, Partick Thistle

And at 30,000 it's down to three

30,000+
46 Rangers
27 Celtic
1 Hibernian

40,000 plus reduces it to two

40,000+
22 Rangers
15 Celtic

And only Celtic have averaged over 50,000

50,000+
11 Celtic

It's worth pointing out that all Celtic's 40,000 or 50,000 averages have come in the past fifteen seasons while the past nineteen seasons account for all bar three of Rangers 40,000+ figures.

Hi, I'm new here after a long time reading the board. It's about the 100,000+ figure. Didn't Rangers play in front of a crowd of 100,000 at (I think) the Olimpiysky National Sports Complex versus Dynamo Kiev in September 1987?

Hi there, and welcome to the forum. The figures given here are all for HOME matches. But yes, there was a figure of 100,000 quoted for Rangers' European Cup match against Dynamo Kiev on September 16th 1987. There have also been two six-figure away gates for Celtic in the same competition - 110,000 v Real Madrid in March 19th 1980 and 107,000 v Dynamo Kiev on November 5th 1986. In addition to the figures mentioned here, there have been 92 six-figure gates at Hampden. 43 of these were Scottish Cup ties (finals, semi-finals and replays), 37 were official Scotland matches, 4 wartime Scotland matches, 2 League Cup Finals, 2 European Cup ties, 2 Southern League Cup ties, the Great Britain v Rest of Europe match in 1947 and a friendly between Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt in 1961 to mark the opening of the Hampden floodlights.

Okay, thanks for clarifying things. Love the board, by the way. I've scrutinised it for months. It's a cracker. Well done.
