Fifer Alex Thomson Celtic and Dunfermline

Post by Fife Bhoy » Mon Apr 15, 2013 11:35 am

Can anyone shed any light on Alex Thomson from Buckhaven after he left Celtic?

The Celtic Wiki says: Personal
Fullname: Alexander Thomson
aka: Alec Thomson, Alex Thomson
Born: 14 June 1901
Died: (?) 1975
Birthplace: Buckhaven, Fife
Signed: 9 Oct 1922
Left: 31 Aug 1923 (loan to Ayr); 16 June 1934 (to Dunfermline)
Position: Inside-Forward
Debut: Clyde 0-1 Celtic (league), 4 Nov 1922
Internationals: Scotland
International Caps: 3
International Goals: 0
.......................................................

But nothing much else seems known about his career after Celtic.

He spent three years at Dunfermline, the first two as team captain, before being given a free transfer in April 1937. The following season he played briefly for Wick Academy (!) in the Qualifying Cup, but I can find no mention of him after that and presume he retired.

As for his birth and death dates, there is a long-standing confusion and the date of birth is wrong. There was an Alexander Thomson born in East Wemyss (just beside Buckhaven) on 14 July 1901 - not 14 June. However, he died in 1917 so this cannot be the footballer.

I've just looked up the shipping manifest for Celtic's tour of USA in summer 1931 (it's on ancestry.com). His age is given as 28 on the outward trip in May, and 29 on the return in July, which would place him as born summer of 1902.

EDIT:
Also, I've just found an obituary notice in the Evening Times, at the foot of the back page: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2 ... page&hl=en Celtic wore black armbands that weekend at home to Motherwell.

He died in Larkhall on 12 November 1975 age 73, which tallies with a birth date in 1902.

Sureitza, Scottish FA.
Thanks for that it seems that there needs to be further research re his birth date.

I will go into the archives of the Dunfermline Press and see if I can come up with anything there about his time with the Pars.

Thanks again.

I've now checked his details and it's a simple typo on the Celtic Wiki - he was born on 14 June 1902 in Mitchell Street, Buckhaven.
