Former East Fifers at Wolves...

Post by Angusfifer » Mon Jul 01, 2013 8:22 am

Undertaking some research on ex East Fife players Davie Duncan and George Aitken who were apparently both on the books of Wolverhampton Wanderers, probably in the early 1940's. According to club historians neither featured in the first team.
I understand there is a comprehensive database of registered EFL players similar to John Litster's Scottish league one. Does anyone have access to this in order to confirm that Duncan and Aitken signed for Wolves?

Duncan was registered with Wolves in 1938-39 and Aitken in 1945-46. Neither appeared in the first team as far as official league and FA Cup matches were concerned but I can't say for certain that Aitken made no first team appearances as ENFA (English National Football Archive) only shows FA Cup matches for 1945-46 as 'official.' But both players were definitely registered with Wolves.

Thanks for that.
Interesting that Aitken went to Wolves in 1945-46 as he played throughout that season for East Fife. I wonder if he was invited down for a trial...

For more on Aitken, see the Sunday Post for 22 September 1946:

8th snippet down the column in bold, headed 'Even numbers won't help'. According to that, he was at Wolves in 1944/45.

David Duncan signed for Wolves from Lochgelly Albert in January 1939, according to newspaper reports.

Thanks for that. My records have Aitken signing for EF firstly in 1943, then in May 1944, turning out regularly throughout 1944-45 and 1945-46, my stats for 1943-44 are incomplete although he played and scored away to Raith Rovers on 2.10.43. At some point he must have registered for Wolves...

Remember, there was a lot of movement in wartime beyond normal transfer requirements, with players turning out for clubs close to barracks, ports or airfields where they were stationed or on leave. Hence Stanley Matthews turning out at Broomfield & Cappielow for example.

Thanks, yes I was aware of that. Out of interest what was your source for Aitken signing for Wolves in 1945-46 as I now see Hugmen's EFL database runs from 1946?

Two sources. Michael Joyce's 'Football League Players Records 1888-1939' is similar to John Litster's disks except it's a book and has league details only. The English National Football Archive http://www.enfa.co.uk/ has line-ups, substitutions, scores, scorers, individual player records, attendances, for all major competitions going back to 1888-89. All that's missing really is the FA Cup pre-1888-89. I should add that non-FL line-ups are not included. This means non-league sides in FA Cup ties, Scottish teams in Texaco/Anglo Scottish Cup & all opponents in European competitions other than all-English affairs.

Minutes for goalscorers and subs are added regularly as is other information such as penalties, red and yellow cards (including the days before cards were actually used).
