Scottish Cup Winners 1874 to 2013

Post by Partick Thistle » Fri Nov 29, 2013 5:55 pm

My insatiable appetite for Partick Thistle stats led me to look at the Scottish Cup this week. In 1921, Thistle won the Cup after a herculean 11 game run. I wanted to know if this was a record and was going to post an SFAQ. However, you learn SO much more when you do it yourself. So that’s what I did. And I found a few surprises along the way.

So here's a wee look at the 127 winners from a few unusual angles.

Firstly, the raw data which may, or may not, be of use to some of you lot...

The "purest" Scottish Cup victories
No replays, no byes, no voided games, no walk overs.
1873–74 - 4 games - Queen's Park
1887–88 - 8 games - Renton
1895–96 - 5 games - Heart of Midlothian
1896–97 - 5 games - Rangers
1901–02 - 5 games - Hibernian
1905–06 - 5 games - Heart of Midlothian
1907–08 - 5 games - Celtic
1922–23 - 6 games - Celtic
1927–28 - 6 games - Rangers
1928–29 - 6 games - Kilmarnock
1935–36 - 6 games - Rangers
1957–58 - 6 games - Clyde
1963–64 - 6 games - Rangers
1969–70 - 5 games - Aberdeen

notes:
Only 14 occurrences although it should be noted that since 1970-71 it has not been possible for a Top Flight side to achieve this feat, all having received 2 round byes from 1970-71 to 2006-07 and 3 round byes from 2007-08 to date.

Renton's "Perfect 8"
Renton's 8 stands forever as the mightiest, proper old fashioned, no nonsense, most well deserved Cup win. In fact, I'm so impressed I've singled it out here to be gazed upon and admired.
R1 Sat Sep 03 1887 Union (Dumbarton) [a] W6-0
R2 Sat Sep 24 1887 Dumbarton Athletic [h] W4-2
R3 Sat Oct 15 1887 Camelon [a] W8-0
R4 Sat Nov 05 1887 Lindertis (Kirriemuir) [a] W13-1
R5 Sat Dec 03 1887 St Mirren [a] W3-2
QF Sat Dec 17 1887 Dundee Wanderers [h] W5-1
SF Sat Jan 14 1888 Queens Park [h] W3-1
FI Sat Feb 04 1888 Cambuslang [n] W6-1

Goals For, 48
Goals Against, 8

An average victory of 6-1.

And, of course, they added one more for good measure when they won the first World Cup Final 3 months later...

The "scraggiest" Scottish Cup victories
By legitimate game win ratio
45.45%
1920–21 - Partick Thistle
50.00%
1909–10 - Dundee
54.55%
1937–38 - East Fife
55.56%
1906–07 - Celtic
1978–79 - Rangers

notes:
In stark contrast to the mighty Renton, Partick Thistle are the only side to have won the Scottish Cup by winning less than half of their games, 5 wins and 6 draws to be precise. Our unorthodox tradition will not allow it to happen any other way!

10 games
1889–90 - Queen's Park
1909–10 - Dundee
1951–52 - Motherwell

notes:
If you allowed the inclusion of voided games then 3rd Lanark RV would appear top with 12 games (9+3) from their controversial 1888-89 campaign. Nothing else would change.

Great stuff - thanks! A friend who is a West Bromwich Albion supporter insists that the game should have been abandoned and replayed as the ground was a quagmire! He also tells me the game was indeed "replayed" as a centenary celebration in 1988 with Dumbarton providing Albion's opposition.

Yes, a fascinating set of stats, but this is the one which could be the most controversial - though of course you pays your money and you makes your choice.

I tend to count these things in SEASONS rather than years owing the fact that the Scottish Cup wasn't contested 1914-1919 & 1939-1946. That's twelve seasons in which no club could have made any attempt to win it. Thus, for instance, Hearts' fallow period of 1906-1956 looks longer than 1956-1998 but in reality they had 38 attempts between victories in the former period compared to 42 in the latter. Obviously this reduces substantially the periods between victories. Or for those waiting for a victory. This season marks 'just' Hibs' 100th attempt since their last triumph.

There's also the question of non-winners. 23 of the current 42 league clubs have never won the trophy ranging from Stranraer (1st entry 1877) to Inverness CT (1st entry 1994). Three (25%) of SPFL clubs have yet to win it.

Another thing that can be looked at is the number of attempts before an initial success.

These are the attempts before a first Scottish Cup success.
1 Queen’s Park
4 Celtic
4 Vale of Leven
10 Dumbarton
10 Hibernian
12 Renton
14 St Bernard’s
16 Heart of Midlothian
16 Third Lanark
17 Dundee
20 Rangers
30 East Fife
32 Aberdeen
35 Falkirk
36 Partick Thistle
40 Airdrieonians
40 Morton
41 St Mirren
42 Kilmarnock
54 Motherwell
57 Clyde
61 Dunfermline Athletic
73 Dundee United

Notable here is that there are ten clubs that took fewer attempts to win the trophy than Rangers and that it took fewer attempts for St Bernard's than either Hearts or Hibs.

Unsuccessful attempts by current league clubs that have never won the Scottish Cup This doesn’t include this season as although some have been eliminated others are still in the competition and, who knows, one of them might become the first new winner since Dundee United in 1994. Nor does it include Qualifying Cup entry in 1914-15 as no Scottish Cup proper was played and therefore there was no opportunity to win the trophy. Attempts do no necessarily correspond to the number of years since the first entry as some clubs didn’t compete every season. The same applies to Dunfermline Athletic above.
125 Hamilton Academical
123 Arbroath
119 East Stirlingshire
118 Alloa Athletic
117 Albion Rovers
117 Stenhousemuir
116 Cowdenbeath
116 Forfar Athletic
115 St Johnstone
114 Montrose
112 Raith Rovers
109 Peterhead
107 Stranraer
99 Elgin City
96 Berwick Rangers
95 Brechin City
91 Ayr United
87 Queen of the South
77 Ross County
67 Stirling Albion
41 Livingston
35 Annan Athletic
19 Inverness CT

Finally, those longest gaps expressed as seasons.
61 Kilmarnock 1929-1997
42 Hearts 1956-1998
39 Motherwell 1952-1991
38 Hearts 1906-1956
32 Falkirk 1913-1957
28 St Mirren 1959-1987
26 St Mirren 1926-1959
23 Aberdeen 1947-1970
20 Rangers 1903-1928
16 Dundee United 1994-2010
16 Third Lanark 1889-1905
15 Hibernian 1887-1902
12 Aberdeen 1970-1982
11 Celtic 1954-1965
11 Rangers 1981-1992
5 Rangers 1936-1948
