Hearts ten up

So Hearts rack up double figures, on the back of Hamilton doing it last season in the Championship.

I do believe the last time in the scottish football league is 1967!

So, the question - has the scottish championship become the league with an outrageous gulf between the top and bottom teams or are these merely two freak results?

I said after 20 minutes, "I'd be happy with a 1-0 out of this".

Cowdenbeath weren't that bad. Hearts just had a day when a lot of their shots hit the inside of the post and went in.

I make Hearts the 50th occurrence of 10 or more scored in the League

On Feb 8th 1964 Kilmarnock beat Falkirk 9-2 in a 1st division match. Killie were 9-0 up after 54 minutes and seven minutes later were awarded a penalty. Brian McIlroy, who had scored four times earlier in the game, sent a tame shot straight to Willie Whigham in the Falkirk goal. Nearly half an hour still to play but there were no more goals for the home side and two conceded as Killie held on to scrape a narrow victory!

Got to admit that I was surprised by the score and, like buses, two come along in quick succession after almost a half-century gap!

Also, I did notice that every goal was either in off the post of very near to the post making it difficult for the Cowdenbeath goalkeeper. Saying that, I felt Bobby Madden, not for the first time, made a very rash decision with the sending-off. I cannot imagine Hearts accumulating ten against a full complement which makes Hamilton's achievement all the more noteworthy.

This coming only a couple of seasons after Falkirk's opening match of the campaign saw them trail Motherwell 9-0 at half-time in a sectional League Cup tie. The Bairns won the second-half 1-0.

Or, as a cynic might say, more dodgy. The Hamilton game and both Airdrie in 1951 and Dunfermline in 1959 had significant impacts on promotion/relegation.

The feat of HMFC in scoring 10 on Saturday is all the more remarkable, in that none of the goals came from a header. Also, no goals were scored in the first 25 minutes nor the last 15 minutes, which means that the 10 goals were scored in a fifty minute period.

Cove Rangers 9, Hawick Royal Albert 0 Scottish Cup 1st Round 13/9/2014. How many time since the 19thC has a club scored nine goals or better in successive Scottish Cup ties? Poor wee Rangers(where have we heard that phrase recently?), the SFA sent them South again for the 2nd Round when they lost to Annan.

Queen`s Park managed double figures in successive Scottish Cup games twice in the 19thC - 10-1 vs. Strathblane & 15-1 vs. Hurlford in the 4th & 5th Rounds respectively in 1879-80 both @ 1st Hampden(Queen`s scored 53 goals in 8 games in winning the Cup that season including a 5-1 vs. Rangers & 14-1 vs. 19th RRV) and 10-0 vs. Partick Thistle & 15-0 vs. Shotts in 5th & 6th Rounds respectively in 1881-82(they also scored 25 goals in the 1st & 2nd Rounds that season by beating Caledonian 14-0 in the 1st Round & Cowalirs 9-0 in the 2nd after a 2-2 draw) - 62 goals in 9 games to win the Cup. En route to their penultimate Scottish Cup success in 1889-90, they scored 32 goals in their 2nd, 3rd & 4th Round ties - 11-0 vs. Summerton Athletic, 8-0 vs. Vale of Leven Wanderers & 13-1(away & their last ever double figures haul) vs. Aberdeen.
