Football in Dumfries

Post by mackem50 » Sat Aug 08, 2015 1:07 pm

Can anyone help me with the following questions?
What was the strip of Tayleurians FC in 1910?
What was the strip of Dumfries Amateurs 1911/12
What was the strip of Dumfries FC 1913.
In 1913 a Dumfries lad,Spottiswood was playing for Carlisle United.Did he go on to bigger and better things?
John G Bell played for Queen of the South Wanderers ( in the earlier years) how long did he play for them and which position?
George ( Geordie ) Bell played for Queen of the South,( he played in their first game) how long did he play for them?
Thanks.

What was the strip of Tayleurians FC in 1910? BLUE
What was the strip of Dumfries FC 1913. MAROON

George Bell moved to Third Lanark on 28 Nov 1919, if that helps.

And I can't find any reference to Spottiswood in either Litster or Hugman

A basic search at the enfa website brings up two players with the name Spottiswood and interestingly enough both of them played for Carlisle!

Joe Spottiswoods career spanned Seasons 1911/12 to 1925/26 and his order of clubs was Catholic Young Men's Society, Carlisle United, Manchester City, Bury, Chelsea, Swansea Town, QPR.

Bob Spottiswoods career spanned Seasons 1907/08 to 1920/21 and his order of club was Carlisle United, Croydon Common, Crystal Palace, Clapton Orient, Caerphilly, Aberdare Athletic, QPR, Inter Milan.

So you could say both of them went on to bigger and better things! As its quite an uncommon surname there is the possibility that they could be related.

Can anyone add to this?

Thanks Brian and Alan. Alan, I went through my clippings for the Cumberland Evening News and one mentioned his Christian name,it was Joe. This was season 1912/13, it says the previous season he played for Carlisle United juniors. The Catholic young men's society, was it a Dumfries team or a district team?
It appears they were brothers. I thought Joe was from Dumfries,he played for Dumfries FC in the 1913 Southern counties charity cup,but I was mistaken, he was born in Carlisle.

Not a trusted source but wikipedia has entries for both Spottiswood's. Bob here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Spottiswood and Joe here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Spottiswood. Also career details and images of Bob Spottiswood at http://www.zen139857.zen.co.uk/SPOTTISWOOD_Robert.pdf. Joe's profile on a Chelsea history website http://stamford-bridge.com/player.php?i ... ame=Joseph

Bob managed Internazionale between 1922-1924.

Football in Dumfries. At the risk of (again) offending Skyline Drifter - aye, it might catch-on.

You couldn't offend me Snuff. Well ok, you probably could if you tried hard enough.

Long time no see. No assignments in Dumfries these days or just coming and going through the media entry without saying hello?

Not at all, when I retired from full-time journalism, I was invited to swap to covering rugby and have been doing this for the past three seasons, and will be again when the club season kicks-off on Saturday.

I do miss my trips to Palmerston, however, a great place to work, smashing bunch of regulars in the press box, and the most eclactic and idiosyncratic choice of pre-match music in Scotland.
