Jimmy MacEwan RIP - Scottish League XI match

Post by bluedragon » Sun Dec 03, 2017 12:36 pm

With the sad passing of Jimmy MacEwan (East Craigie, Arbroath, Raith Rovers and Aston Villa) last week I was looking back at his career and came across an amazing match in which he played. It was an international trial match at Ibrox played on 16 March 1959.

At this time these matches were probably becoming out-dated with crowded fixture lists, etc. However, this sounds an amazing match watched by a 40,000 crowd that quickly got behind the underdogs (the Scottish League XI) as they defeated the Scotland XI. The lead went from the League XI to Scotland and, thanks to an amazing second half rally, back again. Three individual hat-tricks (John White, Andy Kerr and John Colrain) were scored. The scoring sequence went like this (Scottish League XI first) 1:0 - 2:0 - 2:1 - 2:2 - 2:3 – half-time - 2:4 - 3:4 - 4:4 - 5:4 - 6:4 - 6:5. Both the Glasgow Herald and Evening Times reports were full of superlatives. The Herald report said “….in what must have been one of the finest matches ever seen on that ground”. The Evening Times said: "Ask any of the thousands who stood on the Ibrox terracing last night and they will tell you that this was one of the greatest matches they have ever seen.

Scottish League XI: Jock Wallace (Airdrieonians); Duncan McKay (Celtic) and Doug Baird (Partick Thistle); John Smith (Celtic), George McCallum (Third Lanark) and Bert McCann (Motherwell) (captain); Jimmy MacEwan (Raith Rovers) and John White (Falkirk); Andy Kerr (Partick Thistle), Matt Gray (Third Lanark) and Willie Ormond (Hibernian).

Scotland XI: Bill Brown (Dundee); Alex Parker (Everton) and Eric Caldow (Rangers); John Cumming (Heart of Midlothian), Bobby Evans (Celtic) (captain) and Dave Mackay (Tottenham Hotspur); Alex Scott (Rangers) and Bobby Collins (Everton); John Colrain (Celtic), Davie Gibson (Hibernian) and Graham Leggat (Fulham).

Referee: Tom “Tiny” Wharton (Glasgow).

Scottish League XI: White 13m & 19m, Kerr (?) Kerr (?), Kerr (?), White (?)
