Clyde v Albion / Queens Park

With the SPFL deciding to award 3-0 wins to two League 2 clubs in light of Clyde playing an ineligible player in earlier matches, I'm wondering why this change of tact from the authorities.
Any similar occurrences in the past have resulted in points being deducted from the guilty club. The only time I can recall points being awarded was in the 1890s when Renton failed to appear at Dundee Wanderers.
Not sure this form of sanction is the best way forward. This is the kind of decision more akin to amateur league football rather than tier 4 of the seniors. Personally, fines followed by replayed matches, similar to Falkirk v St Mirren in 1990s, would have sufficed.

It is particularly concerning as no consistency is being applied. In the League Cup groupstage Hearts were deducted 2pts (and Cove awarded nothing). Clearly that was so they could still qualify from the section.
