Ayr United Kits - help needed

One of the contributors to the Historical Kits site has suggested that Ayr wore blue/red Barcelona style striped shirts sometime in the 1970s. Seems unlikley to me and I've not been able to verify if this is true or not. Can anyone help?

BTW thanks for your comments on the site - the Scottish section is now under construction and, as anticipated, is attracting considerable interest.

Go on. Admit it. This was a bet, wasn't it? A challenge to get the names of Ayr and Barcelona into the same sentence (see how easy it is). :)

Of course I could be wrong but I'd hazard a guess that their usual b&w was put in the wash with some colourful garments and being too tight-fisted to fork out for new strips they just carried on regardless.

Seriously I can't recall the poor relations ever playing in the blaugrana but I suppose it's possible. After all, Don Revie changed Leeds to all-white in imitation of Real Madrid.

A good place to look is Jim Mechan's site which has a lot of Ayr programme covers over the years. Also the new book on Ayr (see books forum). This was supposed to be out last Tuesday but no sign of it yet. I've ordered a copy and if it says anything about this I'll let you know.

Keep up the good work with your site.

Maybe not quite as far-fetched as I thought: ... 088864.stm

Ayr Utd. DID wear crimson & gold hooped jerseys with blue shorts in their early years so perhaps that exotic combination has some vague resonance with this idea that they once wore a Barcelona strip.

Ayr United definitely wore Red & Blue striped tops with Blue shorts as a change kit from 1974-75 until 1976-77. In the days when changes from traditional colours were few and far between, United certainly wore these colours in their home games with Celtic. Their two Premier fixtures at Somerset in the last of these campaigns saw 17 goals scored...Celts winning 7-2 and 5-3! Television cameras were certainly present at the first of those meetings to witness a very un-Barca-like performance!
Duncan Carmichael's Images of Sport book on Ayr United has a picture of Blue & Red striped Dixie Ingram challenging Billy McNeill in a league game at Somerset in 1975 if proof is needed.
