Phil Vasili's book claiming Walker as Scotland's first black footballer was published before the Scottish Football Museum uncovered the story of Andrew Watson. For an account of this see here about halfway down the page.

When writing 'Killie - The Official History' in 1994 I had some doubts about Walker being the VERY first black player but no absolute proof to the contrary so I hedged my bets accordingly. Writing about the 1898-99 season I said: "Closest rivals, Leith, were beaten in an enthralling match. Leith's winger, Walker, was one of the earliest black players in Scotland. Happily, there were no reports of racial taunting at this game."

I'll update the web pages with the various links.

Would it be true to say he was the First Black Top League footballer.

In Scotland? Possibly. Overall? No. Arthur Wharton played league football for Rotherham Town in 1893-94 (Div 2) then briefly for Sheffield United (Div 1) in 1894-95.

Although I for one am not aware of a black player in the Scottish League earlier than Walker, the danger in making absolute assertions is that someone, somewhere comes up with an earlier example. That's what happened with Wharton who for years was cited as the first black player before the Scottish Football Museum unearthed the history of Andrew Watson.
