For all we keep getting told how uncompetitive our game is I don't think this has happened in the Premier Division/SPL. I think the last time it happened in the TOP FLIGHT was Rangers 10-2 win over Raith Rovers in December 1967.

I can't say offhand if there's been a bigger score in the old Division Two or the 1st, 2nd or 3rd divisions since then but I'll have a dig around.

Yes, Rangers 10-2 thumping of Raith Rovers in December 1967 was indeed the last time that double-figures were achieved by a club in a top division match.
In fact since WWII only six other instances of such humiliations have occurred in top-flight league football:-
Airdrieonians beat Falkirk 11-1 at Broomfield on 28/4/1951
Dunfermline beat Partick Thistle 10-1 at East End Pk on 18/4/1951
Hibernian beat Airdrieonians 11-1 at Broomfield on 24/10/1959 & then beat Partick Thistle 10-2 at Firhill on 19/12/1959
Dundee beat Queen of the South 10-2 at Dens on 1/12/1962
Hibernian beat Hamilton Acad 11-1 at Easter Rd on 6/11/1965
Numerous clubs netted nine goals in a top-division encounter prior to the birth of the Premier Division in 1975-76, yet none has bettered eight in thirty years since (Aberdeen, Celtic & Rangers have scored 8 in Premier/SPL games).
The Scottish FA Cup and League Cup have produced a number of double-figure performances in the post-war era, Stirling Albion leading the way with their 20-0 trouncing of Selkirk in December 1984.
On the subject of resounding victories I'm reminded of a few classical journalistic quotes that show no sign of abating even in the modern age.
(1) Arbroath 36 Bon Accord 0, Sc.Cup Sep 1885 : "After the twentieth goal was scored, Bon Accord played like a team without hope" (Ah, the innocence of the victorians' amateur spirit)
(2) Ayr 16 Beith 0, Sc.Cup Sep 1889 : " Some of the spectators left Somerset in disgust as they were unable to follow the scoring. It is expected that a scoreboard will be erected for future matches!" (Looking at Somerset today, that scoreboard must still be lying around somewhere!)
(3) Hibernian 9 Montrose 0, Lge Cup, Sep 2003 from the Daily Star : "Hibs saw off the Angus minnows in a nine-goal thriller!" (Hardly a thriller I'd have thought?). It got worse...."Dobie sealed the victory when he scored a ninth seconds from time" (Were Montrose realistically still a threat at 8-0 behind in the 89th minute?)

Correction to previous post : Dunfermline v Partick Thistle match was in 1959 not 1951

On November 19th 1881 Killie beat Our Boys from Dundee 9-2 in a Scottish Cup 4th round tie after trailing 2-1 at half-time. The local paper said the opposition couldn't "play the game much better than eleven old ladies"

And after a 13-2 win against Saltcoats Vics in a 2nd round Qualifying Cup tie on September 12th 1896 it was reported "t'would be a waste of space detailing a game so one-sided."

As a result two of the goalscorers weren't identified.

One of those Premier eight goals was at Rugby Park on Sep 20th 1980 when Rangers won 8-1. This prompted the headline "Killie lose out in nine-goal thriller"

Aye, but it was only 2-1 at half-time.

What a dreadful season that was. Three wins, 91 league goals conceded. And a game at Tannadice similar to Easter Road. 1-0 down at the break, 7-0 at the finish. Only signing was a player from Muirkirk Juniors who was put straight into the first team.

Relegated and spent the next ten years out of the Premier.

Thanks for reminding me

Confirmation from Forrest Robertson that the Rangers v Raith match was the most recent LEAGUE instance of ten or more goals being scored. He sends this list of double figure games involving Scottish sides since then.

Dunfermline Athletic 10, Apoel 1 ECWC 18/9/1968
Montrose 12, Vale of Leithen 0 Scottish Cup 4/1/1975
Rangers 12, Valetta 0 ECWC 28/9/1983
Stirling Albion 20, Selkirk 0 Scottish Cup 1st Round 8/12/1984
Albion Rovers 1 Partick Thistle 11 League Cup 10/8/1993
Ross County 11, St.Cuthbert Wanderers 0 Scottish Cup 11/12/1993
Keith 1, Rangers 10 Scottish Cup 27/1/1996.

My memory is appalling, but ISTR that before the Albion Rovers Partick Thistle game, Albion boss Tommy Gemmell was tipping Albion to cause an upset that night.

Killie ALMOST scored ten as you probably know. Leading Falkirk 9-0 in Feb 64 when Brian McIlroy missed a penalty. the team slackened off after that but managed to cling on to a 9-2 victory

Brilliant stuff as always. Although a fortnight apart Dundee's 1947 games were successive matches and while poor old Brechin have let in more double figure games than anyone else they have the consolation of an 11-1 away win over Edinburgh City in the C Division in 1948-49

One game not in my 'official' list is

Sat 19 Oct 1940 Clyde 10 Hearts 3

http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/games/19401019.html

which was the opposite of

Sat 03 Oct 1891 Clyde 3 Hearts 10

Jackson; James; Jackson; James; Jackson
