TOP TIER AVERAGES

Postby Scottish » Thu Feb 12, 2015 2:56 am

I am confident that the overwhelming majority of these figures are accurate or extremely close to being so (for instance I've seen different figures for Germany but these are from the most reliable source - the Bundesliga itself). There are a few which are doubtful, particularly in Africa and some parts of Asia, but in most cases the figures have been gleaned from official league and association/federation websites. Explanations regarding sources and accuracy are given on the respective national threads. I don't think (said he doffing his own cap to himself) such an exhaustive and comprehensive survey of global attendances has been undertaken before. If it has then I haven't seen it and I've wasted a large chunk of my time these past few months I'm not going to see again. Anyway, FWIW, these are the average attendances in the eighty-eight leagues I've been able to track down. Figures are for 2013-14 for countries which have a "traditional" European season or apertura/clausura in Latin America. They are for 2014 for those countries whose season is contained within a calendar year. More info in the sticky at the the top of the page.

Notes on the figures: to save anyone from having to count, only seven countries average 20,000+ and twenty-three have a five-figure average. Forty-two can claim 5,000 or better but fifteen are below 1,000. Six of these can't even manage 500.

Wiki says India's average rose slightly in the 2015 season, to 27,111.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Indi ... ttendances

Note that this average doesn't take into account a match played at a neutral venue: Chennaiyin vs. Kolkata in December was played in Pune due to flooding in Chennai. That would lessen the average a bit.

Kolkata (a long-time hotbed of football) and Kerala led the attendance standings, both over 50k, Kerala slightly higher. It surprised me how well Kerala are doing in attendance since the I-League club that tried to form there failed. It's also not got quite the footballing tradition of Kolkata or Goa. But fair play to them, they're really getting the crowds out.
