TOP TIER LOWS

Postby Scottish » Thu Feb 12, 2015 2:14 am

There are some appallingly low attendances in some top flights, even in countries where a decent average and/or high figures are recorded. Thirteen countries saw crowds of fifty or less, thirty had 100 or fewer, forty-eight had clubs which couldn't scale the 500 mark and only twenty leagues didn't record a sub-1,000 attendance at some point. Only six countries kept all their figures above 5,000. For further proof of which are the most popular leagues, look at the last two names on this list and reflect that these are the LOWEST crowds seen all season.

I expect the USA to rise significantly this year now that Chivas USA are no longer in the league. Lowest so far is 10,0035 for Montreal. Either Montreal or Columbus may drop below 8,000 if they continue their poor form, but with traditionally badly-attended DC United topping the league they should stay reasonably high. As things stand, the USA will in all probability leapfrog India into 3rd place.

They won't. Spain & Mexico have already overtaken India's figure of last season. France have moved ahead of Italy. The removal of Chivas helps the USA but it's chiefly the introduction of New York City & Orlando City that has bumped up US figures. They're currently about 1,300 per game behind the once mighty Serie A but while there's no way of predicting what the Indian figures will be later on this year there's no way the Americans can end up third. Spain's 27,000 & Mexico's 26,500 are way out of reach. France & Italy are possible targets but highly doubtful this season at least.

The US will definitely overtake the Netherlands this season to become eighth overall.

I'm talking about the top tier lows list, not averages. Of course the USA are nowhere near the top of the average list.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, Pune City's capacity is low. I expect every Bournemouth match to be a sell-out so that would keep the England 2015-16 low just above the current US low. Likewise Ingolstadt in Germany.

For last season, Cypriot top flight club Doxa (who manged a crowd of 4 - four - in a league game in January 2015) managed a low of 11 against Anagennisi Deryneia on January 7th 2017. Doxa are owned by a rich businessman, so they have former Liga and EFL Championship players like Coro, Albert Serran, and Herold Goulon playing for them in a massive old athletics stadium in Nicosia. Very strange club. Like many Cypriot clubs they originally played in the North but fled after the Turkish occupation, but many other clubs (most notably Anorthosis) have kept their old fanbase. If Doxa ever had one, it's gone now.
