The Polish top division Ekstraklasa has sixteen teams but once they’ve all played each other twice the season isn’t over. They then split into championship and relegation groups of eight with teams in each group playing the others in their group once more. This means nineteen home games for some and eighteen for others. To complicate matters, teams carry forward 50% of the points gained from the regular season. These are from all points won, not just those from others in the same group. Odd numbers are rounded up before being divided by two.

While the top group contests the title and European places, the bottom two in the lower group are relegated.

On the face of it Poland occupies a respectable place in the attendance table, coming in at 25th in the world and 14th in Europe. But it’s that latter position which should be a cause for concern. Poland is the ninth largest country in Europe in terms of population yet its average attendances trail several smaller, some substantially so, countries – Belgium, Switzerland, Scotland, Portugal and especially the Netherlands which has less than half the population of Poland yet over twice as many fans by average attendance.

The highest crowd last season was 38,458 and the lowest 2,500. Best supported Lech Poznań were 156th in the world. The average was 8,216.

The second level I Liga has eighteen teams playing each other twice with two going up and four down. When, like last season, a club fails to have its licence renewed then the fourth last is spared from the drop. Average at this level is 1,611 which puts Poland in 26th – much the same place as the top level is. Best crowd last season was 6,634 and the worst was 150.

There are massive reorganisations taking place in Polish football. See the level four thread for the huge number of teams taking part at that level last season. The third tier has been streamlined into a national league this season but last year it was split into two regions – East and West. The Eastern average was 913 and the Western 784. Overall it was 849. Highest gates were 6,500 and 5,000 respectively with lowest sixty-five (East) and 100 (West). Although there were a number of familiar names dotted abut the two regions it was undoubtedly the presence of Stal Mielec which was a big factor in the better figures in the Eastern region.

There were eighteen clubs in both groups playing each other twice. The reorganisation meant that over half the clubs were relegated in order to create the new national third level.
