Hugh and James Henderson

Post by J.S.Norway » Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:03 pm

Liverpool signed James Henderson from Annbank in September 1893. After 1 game he returned to Annbank. Is it correct that he later played for Fairfield, Broxburn Athletic, Edinburgh Thistle and Partick Thistle (3 games in 1900/01.)?
Did Hugh Henderson play for other clubs than Third Lanark (1892-94), Liverpool (1894/95) and Partick Thistle (Spring 1895-3 games) ?

I had a look at the contemporary newspapers. There were two Hendersons playing for Annbank in the 1890’s but the other was a forward. When James Henderson left Liverpool it appears as if he returned home to play for Annbank. I found references to him as an Annbank player in each of the seasons from 1893/94 to 1899/1900. He had a brief spell playing for Ayr FC in 1897/98 season. John Litster’s disk shows this Ayr player as “James Henderson”. He joined them at the start of the season but returned to Annbank in January 1898. He then remained at Annbank until he joined Partick Thistle in August 1900.

James Henderson was playing left half when Annbank beat East Stirlingshire to win the Scottish Qualifying Cup in the 1895/96 season.

I am confused about his posision. For Liverpool he was a center forward. He was also center forward in his 3 games for Partick Thistle. Was he left half for Annbank?

It is difficult to unravel which one was which! The Henderson who signed for Ayr FC from Annbank at the start of the 1897/98 season and returned to Annbank in January 1898 is definitely James Henderson. He is on a list in the Scottish Referee (Friday 24 September 1897) of players who were registered with the SFA to play in the Scottish Cup. John Litster’s disk says that he was an inside right. However, he could be another player with the same name as your player.

Thank you!! It is not easy with similar names and also newspapers at that time who mostly reported only last names.

The Ayr United historian has told me that James Henderson only played two matches for Ayr FC. The first at centre forward and the second at left half. This may explain the two different positions he is reported to have played in for other clubs.
