Vale of Leven 1923-24

Post by StAndrewsHMFC » Wed Jan 02, 2008 2:02 am

A very random question, I'm actually trying to find out information on St.Bernards, but I noticed in 1923-24 St.Bernards, Arbroath and Broxburn United all finished below with a point less than Vale of Leven in Division 2 but it was Vale who were relegated to the 3rd division for the following year (along with bottom club Lochgelly). Does anyone know why this happened? Was it still a re-election process?

I'd check the results - you'll probably find the totals are wrong. If my memory serves right, the table in the AFS' original booklets is.

Just checked the AFS results and Broxburn's and Vale's totals in the table are indeed wrong. Vale finished in 19th place on 31 points and were relegated, Broxburn finished 16th on 34 points.

Thanks for clearing that up, given the actual totals does that mean that the Broxburn v Vale game has been recorded incorrectly?

Forrest Robertson and myself discussed this some years ago. I'm away from home right now and don't have access to my records but IIRC I think what happened is that a Broxburn win over Vale of Leven was somehow read as a win for the Alexandria team. This affected the tables and the goal averages of the two sides.

But certainly VoL were properly relegated as the second bottom team
