Post by Carlucci » Fri Feb 01, 2008 11:16 pm

Could anyone name the line-ups, scorers, scoring sequence , managers in charge of the teams, and referees in 1961 when Hearts and Rangers faced each other in the Scottish League Cup Final at Hampden Park ? Thank you a lot.

It's amazing that the replay took place almost 2 months after the first game.

Line-ups for the first match on October 28th 1961;
Rangers: Ritchie, Shearer, Caldow, Davis, Paterson, Baxter, Scott, McMillan, Millar, Brand, Wilson

Hearts: Marshall, Kirk, Holt, Cumming, Polland, Higgins, Ferguson, Elliott, Wallace, Gordon, Hamilton

Jimmy Millar opened the scoring for Rangers after fifteen minutes. A John Cumming penalty levelled the game after 78 minutes. Unusually for this era thirty minutes of extra time was played but there was no further scoring.

A combination of bad weather (the replay was postponed once) and both clubs European commitments meant it was nearly two months later before the replay took place (something the likes of Walter Smith might want to think about when moaning about replays nowadays).

Changes to the line-ups were:
Rangers: Baillie for Paterson
Hearts: Cruickshank for Marshall, Davidson for Elliott, Bauld for Wallace, Blackwood for Gordon

All the goals were scored inside the opening twenty minutes. Jimmy Millar put Rangers ahead after seven minutes with Norrie Davidson equalising sixty seconds later. Ralph Brand restored Rangers' lead after fifteen minutes play and four minutes after that Ian McMillan scored to make the final result 3-1.

The attendance was 88,635 for the first game and 47,552 for the replay. Scot Symon (Rangers) and Tommy Walker (Hearts) were the managers. Bobby Davidson of Airdrie was the referee for both matches.
