What's the most fixtures a Scottish team has played?

Post by lbb » Mon Feb 25, 2008 10:13 am

Looking at Rangers' fixture pile up got me wondering what is the most competitive fixtures a Scottish club team has faced in one season.

The most obvious candidate to check was season 1992-93. In this season, Rangers played 44 league matches, 5 League Cup matches, 5 Scottish Cup matches and 10 Champions League games giving a total of 64 matches from August 1, 1992 to May 29, 1993. This appears to be a post-War record for Rangers with 61 matches in 1978-79 (helped by a comical 9 Scottish Cup games) coming second.

This season, Rangers are on course to play 59 matches including the CIS Cup Final against Dundee United, the Scottish Cup replay against Hibs and the UEFA Cup tie against Werder Bremen. Progression against Hibs and/or Bremen would obviously add to this tally.

Does anyone know the most competitive fixtures for a Scottish club team? There would have been fewer European matches, generally, years ago but I wonder if the dreaded League Cup sections would have boosted the fixture list along with the possibility of Scottish Cup replays.

I think Dundee United in 1986-87 will be hard to beat. 44 League, 4 League Cup, 7 Scottish Cup, 12 UEFA Cup for a total of 67. That was between August 9th 1986 - May 20th 1987.

That's some amount of games . . .

In 1966/67 & 1969/70 when Celtic reached the European Cup Final in both years, they had played a total of 59 games in each season

I'll do a check on my database this evening. I'll split it into 3 groups

League + Cup

League + Cup + L Cup

League + Cup + L Cup + Europe or Texaco/Anglo Scottish Cup

Should Dryborough Cup count?

John Litster counts it. I include it in the category of 'Other First Class' which also takes in the Texaco/Anglo-Scottish for example.

BTW the 'old' League Cup shouldn't make much difference. Nowadays (from 2000-01 onwards) an SPL side plays a minimum of 40 games per season - 38 SPL, 1 SC, 1 SLC. From the start of European club football until 1975 top division clubs played a minimum of just one more game - 34 SFL, 6 SLC, 1 SC = 41. In 1975-76, 76-77 it was 43 (36 SFL, 6 SLC, 1SC). From 1977-81 it was 39 (36 SFL, 2 SLC, 1 SC). From 1981-84 it was 43 again on the same lines as 75-77. From 1984-86, 88-91 and 94-2000 it was 38 - same as 77-81 but with only one SLC game).

The seasons with most potential are 1986-88 and 91-94 with a minimum of 46 (44 SFL and one apiece in the cups).

Scottish Cup replays, second replays etc will have an impact though.

I think it's safe not to look at the pre-war era when the 'maximum minimum' was 43 (42 SFL, 1 SC) between 1919-22 and no SLC or European games.

The post-war 'maximum minimum' needed to win or play in a losing final in the knockout competitions was six in the Scottish Cup (1946-54 and 1957-64) and twelve in the League Cup (1972-73, 73-74)

The 'minimum minimum' is five in the Scottish Cup (all seasons other than the above) and four in the League Cup (1998- date for clubs competing in Europe)

I'll do a bit of 'weighting' as well. I'll work out what the average no of games played in a season was for 'league teams' and use that to do a 'ratio' check as well.

I'd put in an honourable mention for Partick Thistle in their Scottish Cup winning season of 1920-21 with 53 games - 42 SFL + 11 SC. Hard to see any other pre-war side topping that, even allowing for multiple replays.

I include the Summer Cup and the US tournaments in my Killie records which allows for 60 games in 1964-65 (34 SFL, 6 SLC, 4 SC, 4 Fairs Cup, 6 Summer Cup, 6 USA).

I suppose adding those games - and the Drybrough Cup would pump up some of the totals. It would certainly take Dunfermline's 1964-65 tally up to 62.

The Jags also played one Glasgow up & 1 Merchants Charity Cup game that season (both 1st class fixtures in those days) for a total of 56.

And now 66. As there are no further replays in the cup competitions they need to reach one final to equal Dundee United's record and both to break it.

67 now.

Would it be asking too much for the SPL to announce the remainder of Rangers' fixture list now?

Seemingly so.

The saga continues. Tosh McKinlay in the Glasgow Evening Times - "I was at Dundee when United got to the Uefa Cup Final and they were refused an extension to the league."

Anyone know if this is true? Did United ask for an extension?

What about the Juniors? The central league fixture list alone stretched to 50 games for two seasons in the 1930s. Add the various cup-ties and you may have a match list of epic proportions!
